I love this novel. I love the characterization that Hinton is able to create. I feel like I know these guys. (Ponyboy, Dallas, Johnny, Soda Pop). So many great themes running through this story (stereotypes, family, friendship, survival, etc.)Anyone cry?
Jaime, you did not know there was movie! You have to watch it! It isn't as good as the book, but it is worth watching. I am of the age that loved all of the guys in the movie (Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise and many others).
Gang, this conversation is awesome! I love how you are responding to one another and you seem to really be thinking deeply about the novel. Way to go!This book was published in 1951 and is considered to be a "classic" by many. Yes, it is controversial and has brought about many debates. Holden Caulfied is a controversial character all by himself as he battles depression, a nervous breakdown, impulsive spending, sexual exploration and other forms of erratic behavior. Many argue that these problems still face American youth today and therefore, the relevancy of the book still holds fast. This novel is still used in many high schools today throughout America. Some argue though that the book is just too depressive and that Holden is an overdeveloped character. I have some critics that view this novel to be humorous, witty and clever. Any thoughts on this take?
This is our first book of the semester. I hope you enjoy reading it. When you finish reading post your response on our discussion board. Feel free to talk about anything you want. It will not hurt my feelings if you did not enjoy the book; however, you must indicate why and what troubles you about the book! This should make for some fun and interesting discussions. You must also discuss possible classroom applications. Try to respond to at least 2 other members in our club! Let's have fun!
