The novel I have chosen is entitled "Chains" by Laurie Halse Anderson. It is largely historical fiction, and also goes into depth with social issues surrounding the time period the book is set in.
Historical Fiction: Set during the American Revolution in the late 1700s, the story follows African American slave Isabel and her younger sister Ruth. After the passing of both their mother and father, the siblings struggle to find freedom in the midst of unrest spreading throughout the 13 Colonies.
Social Issues: This novel explores social issues surrounding the historical events of America's past. It is not unknown that African American slaves were treated with cruelty and vileness, however, Laurie Halse Anderson's novel captures the common mindset during this dark time. She goes into depth with concepts such as the Loyalists vs Rebels and views on human equality. The thoughts and world views of the citizens are elaborated upon, giving the reader a realistic look into the world of Chains.
