Chase-
It took me forever to get through 1Q84 in spite of the fact that I'm a huge Murakami fan. It's just so long!

Mission: Read one book about Human Rights &/or the people who have fought for them.
Human rights as defined by Merriam-Webster:
"rights (as freedom from unlawful imprisonment, torture, and execution) regarded as belonging fundamentally to all people"
Civil Rights as defined by Black's Law dictionary:
"These are the rights that are granted to every citizen of the United States by the constitution and all of its amendments. Equal protection is guaranteed to every one regardless of race, colour and creed."

Mini-Challenges will typically run for one month. New minis will appear each month on a variety of topics.

You can use books across challenges in this folder. So The Bell Jar could be used in Alphabet Soup as a "B" and in Decade Challenge in the 1960s and in the Rory Gilmore Challenge.

Read a debut novel. (First novel by any author of your choice.)
Here's a few links to some famous firsts:

I think it's a very challenging challenge. I tend to choose from the same periods over and over.

That's a great idea! Me, too!

Middle Grade- also called "Intermediate." Usually a chapter book written for children between the ages of 9-15. Newbury titles would fit here. Also, the Harry Potter books, Beverly Cleary, Rick Riordan, the Magic Treehouse series, Little House series, Anne of Green Gables, The Black Stallion, etc.
Magical Realism- "Matthew Strecher defines magic realism as "what happens when a highly detailed, realistic setting is invaded by something too strange to believe." (from Wikipedia)
For example, Beloved or One Hundred Years of Solitude.
Epistolary- written as a series of letters (or diary entries). For example, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.
Made Into A Movie- does not have to be recently
Based on Mythology- some examples might be The Lightning Thief or Till We Have Faces or Grendel. Use your own judgement.
Color/Lettering blocks refer to the cover of the book. Wintery colors for this one. Spring Bingo will have different colors and categories. ;-)
