118012 In very proud of the NF reading I accomplished this year. Theoretically, I love non-fiction, but it takes me forever to finish anything. So... Yay, Me!

118012 Crazy Christmas Baby?
Sorry to hear that, Camille. Although my mind has created all sorts of Crazy Christmas Baby scenarios. Too bad I can't draw. ... And I hope it wasn't as bad for you as my imagination. :p

Chase-
It took me forever to get through 1Q84 in spite of the fact that I'm a huge Murakami fan. It's just so long!

118012 The birthday of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. is January 15, so it seemed a good time to focus on the struggle for Human Rights, including Civil Rights throughout the world.

Mission: Read one book about Human Rights &/or the people who have fought for them.

Human rights as defined by Merriam-Webster:
"rights (as freedom from unlawful imprisonment, torture, and execution) regarded as belonging fundamentally to all people"

Civil Rights as defined by Black's Law dictionary:
"These are the rights that are granted to every citizen of the United States by the constitution and all of its amendments. Equal protection is guaranteed to every one regardless of race, colour and creed."

118012 Chinese New Year, Lunar New Year, Tet. This holiday goes by many names and begins on January 28 this year. 2018 is the year of the ROOSTER.

Mission: Read one book in January set in Asia or about the Asian experience elsewhere in the world.

Alternate Mission: Read a book about a rooster.

118012 You can ask questions here about the challenges in this folder.

Mini-Challenges will typically run for one month. New minis will appear each month on a variety of topics.
Dec 27, 2016 06:29PM

118012 The Title makes this self-explanatory, but these challenges will run all year.

You can use books across challenges in this folder. So The Bell Jar could be used in Alphabet Soup as a "B" and in Decade Challenge in the 1960s and in the Rory Gilmore Challenge.

I think it's a very challenging challenge. I tend to choose from the same periods over and over.

Happy Birthday, Wanda June
Knee High by the Fourth of July

118012 Winter Bingo Board!

Dec 27, 2016 12:28PM

118012 Definitions (Updated as questions arise)...

Middle Grade- also called "Intermediate." Usually a chapter book written for children between the ages of 9-15. Newbury titles would fit here. Also, the Harry Potter books, Beverly Cleary, Rick Riordan, the Magic Treehouse series, Little House series, Anne of Green Gables, The Black Stallion, etc.

Magical Realism- "Matthew Strecher defines magic realism as "what happens when a highly detailed, realistic setting is invaded by something too strange to believe." (from Wikipedia)
For example, Beloved or One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Epistolary- written as a series of letters (or diary entries). For example, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.

Made Into A Movie- does not have to be recently

Based on Mythology- some examples might be The Lightning Thief or Till We Have Faces or Grendel. Use your own judgement.

Color/Lettering blocks refer to the cover of the book. Wintery colors for this one. Spring Bingo will have different colors and categories. ;-)
