1176148 I knew too, Martha. :)
1176148 Me too. I tried for 25 plays this year but once again didn’t get past 19. Here we go again!

1176148 Hiding with the one on procrastination, no doubt. :)

1176148 Wow, that's a blast from the past, Jackie, but a good pick!

1176148 I commit to reading Mr Wilder & Me by Jonathan Coe in January, because it was chosen for me about a year ago in another challenge and I still haven't read it.

1176148 I have heard consistently good things about that book, Denise. I need to move it higher on TBR.

1176148 Please nominate a genre for February 2024 in this thread, if you would like to. The only rule for genre nominations is that you cannot nominate a genre that we've already read this calendar year (in other words, since we're doing Sci Fi in January, Sci Fi can't be a candidate again until 2025).

Not planning to be a huge stickler on the "genre vs subgenre" thing. If it's a recognized book category (i.e. you can reasonably expect the average Goodreads reader to know what it is), post it.

Nominations open until 1/14, poll to follow.

If you want to see examples of genres and subgenres that Goodreads has some lists for, or figure out where a book/style of book you like happens to fit, try this link:

1176148 Hi, all! The genre of the month for January is Science Fiction. January is all about the future and I needed to get one more cliche in for 2023 before the year ends, so that's why this genre was picked.

Feel free to post your intended reads, just as we do with the Color Challenge. Or come by and post what you've already read in January that happens to fit.

1176148 This, along with the "commit to one book" and the "quarterly group reads instead of monthlies" was one of the ideas voted in in our poll about how to make the group reads more useful to the members.

Here's how it will work: every month we'll post a genre, and that month any book you read that fits you can post in that thread. You can also post books you plan to read that month after the thread goes up, just like we currently do in the color challenge.

I will post a January genre thread here shortly, and a thread for nominating genres for February as well.

1176148 So here's where I screwed up. I meant to post this in early December, and then got temporarily moved into a 60+hour-a-week job and forgot about it. Mea culpa!

I imagine it will ultimately be Maddie who runs this because she did the monthlies, but since I screwed this up, this quarter I will fix it.

We're going to do an abridged quarterly for 1Q24. Please nominate a book for group read below between now and January 7th. On the 8th, we'll post a poll and we'll post the winner on the 15th, and have the remaining 2.5 months of the quarter to read it. On or around March 1, we'll start looking for 2Q24 nominations.

Welcome to a new year of reading, everyone!

1176148 Many of us like the idea of a group read but can't fit it in in a given month. We're going to try something different: we'll still have a group read, but we'll do it quarterly. Same concept as the nonfiction quarterly read, which gets more traction than the monthly group reads, but it will be for fiction books.

Nominations threads will be posted here every quarter and a poll will go up just as with the NFs.
1176148 This is a very free flowing challenge, as in you can add what ever you wish to read, as long as it is poetry/plays/epistolary/essays/short stories.

No set target for the year, but it would be nice to read at least one of each.
This challenge starts on Jan 1st 2024 and ends 31st Dec 2024.

Feel free to start a thread here to track your progress.

2. Each book must consist of over 500 pages.
3. You make and edit your own list.

1176148 Yep, posting all kinds of new things today, and this will be one of them.

1176148 Hi, everyone! This is the thread for the January "Commit to one book monthly" challenge. In this thread, post one book you intend to read for January, so everyone else can see your pick. When you finish reading it, we'd love for you to come back and post your opinion. I expect everyone's TBRs to suffer because of this monthly reading challenge, but I'm prepared to make that sacrifice. Are you? :-D

1176148 Most of us read more than one book a month, but if you are at all like me, there are books you plan to read in a given month that you simply don't get to.

When we were looking at ideas to increase the popularity of book discussions, one idea was a thread where members could commit to one specific book per month, and then come back and give their opinion of it once it was read.

This (we hope) accomplishes a couple of objectives: one, it helps others determine if they are interested in a book or not by seeing other group members' opinions of it. Two, unlike a monthly "picked book" challenge, it doesn't commit anyone to reading a book they weren't already planning to read and might not have room for, because if they don't they really can't participate.

We're still going to have "picked book" reads based on members' nominations and voting, but we're going to do it quarterly to give people a better chance to obtain the book and get it read without throwing off the rest of their reading schedule.

1176148 Hi everyone, and happy new year! We're going to try some of the ideas that have been put forth to replace the monthly group read, which wasn't getting much traction. Stay tuned!
