PamG wrote: "When you get a chance, could you set up the What's on your June 2020 TBR? thread?"OK, it's done.
Thomas wrote: "Has anyone noticed since the Coronavirus outbreak that ARC release dates on some books being pushed further out by two or three months?"Yep. COVID-19 has pushed back release dates on most media. Publishers don't like uncertainty. Then you have some big authors like Stephen King who moved his release date up so people would have something to do while being stuck at home.
The Great Gatsby: The Graphic Novel ★★★★Fred Fordham does a good job of distilling an American classic to the drawn page.
Terry ~ Huntress of Erudition wrote: "due to an invasion by Orgs"I think you mean Orcs. There, now you'll sound cooler to your son.
Battle Born: Lapis Lazuli ★★★★★This is the story of a platoon of Marines sent to a remote region of Afghanistan to stop the Taliban from selling lapis lazuli, now classified as a conflict mineral.
Happily Ever After & Everything In Between ★★★★Debbie Tung's latest collection of her adorable web comic. This one is about the first few years of her marriage.
How I Survived ★★★A short, harrowing tale of how an Inuit man was able to keep himself alive for 4 days while stranded on the sea ice in Baffin Bay.
Kelly wrote: "It’s a pretty long book if I remember correctly but captivating. I probably have a tattered copy somewhere in my house. I read it back in the day before digital."It's around 1,200 pages. I read it before King revised it and added 250 or so pages back in, back in 1990.
Katie wrote: "Hey Chad! Thank you! I'm about to review Red Hail and Gates of Mars (not on goodreads unfortunately), but they look super promising! Do you have a favorite artist in the graphic novel world?"Red Hail sounds interesting. I might have to check that out. If you have the ISBN info for Gates of Mars, I can add it to GR. I'm a GR librarian. ;) It's difficult to pick just one artist. Mike Allred, Alex Ross, John Byrne, Frank Quitely, Gary Frank, Lee Bermejo, Andrea Sorrentino, Jamie McKelvie to name a few.
Katie wrote: "I paint D&D and Pathfinder miniatures. Mostly player characters, a few mobs here and there. I'm still new to the hobby, but I'm learning new techniques each time I pick up a brush! I always enjoy a good Christmas village!"
I'm assuming you play roleplaying games too? We couldn't even get our girlfriends to play with us back in the day. I'm glad to see times have changed. I always found painting miniatures calming, probably like adult coloring books do for folks nowadays. My favorites are painting monsters. They allow you to really go wild with the colors and details.
Kelly wrote: "OMG! I loved that book. It’s been forever since I read that book! So intense!"Surprisingly, a lot of people want to read it now. I had to wait 6 weeks to get it. I went to renew it and there's 50+ people on the waiting list.
Katie wrote: "Hello everyone! I'm Katie from Texas! I started a book blog, mainly focused on reviews, earlier this year and I love the book community! I've been reading and devouring stories for so long, it felt..."Hi Katie! Welcome! I read a lot of fantasy and sci-fi too, along with tons of graphic novels.
What kind of miniatures do you paint? I used to paint a lot of fantasy, D&D type miniatures. These days I've moved more towards creating Halloween and Christmas villages.
Kelly wrote: "Have you read anything by Richard Preston? He almost seems very relevant now! I’m sure he’s investigating this virus."I have not. For virus related reads, I went back and started rereading The Stand. I haven't read it since high school.
The Stringbags ★★★★Stringbags was a nickname used for some ungainly biplanes used by the British in WWII. They were instrumental in some critical Naval battles including sinking the Bismarck.
Sherry wrote: "But I can’t get why my account shows books as wish only and an account with no reviews shows a request button. This is on a lot of books, not just a couple."Yeah, I have no idea about that. I've never created additional accounts. I try not to worry too much about the "Wish For it" thing. If I get turned down on NG, I look for it over on Edelweiss. If I can't get it either place, I'll get it from the library when it comes out. There's plenty else for me to always read in the meantime.
Once you've reviewed multiple books for a publisher, you'll start getting auto approved, especially if they are smaller publishers. If you want to increase those review stats, review some childrens books or graphic novels. That's a quick way to get your stats up and a lot of books in those categories are "Read Now".
I have gotten a few wishes. I think they were from Boom. At this point though, they approved enough books from me they just set me to auto-approved. I think it depends on the publisher on how they operate.
