The sounds, grammatical forms, and syntactical types, with a few exceptions, are derived from Latin, but the vocabulary has absorbed a number of Germanic and Arabic words, and a few have Celtic or Iberian origin. Before the close of the Middle Ages the language threatened to become almost as abbreviated ...more

“ Pedro da Maia amava! Era um amor à Romeu, vindo de repente numa troca de olhares fatal e deslumbradora, uma dessas paixões que assaltam uma existência, a assolam como um furacão, arrancando a vontade, a razão, os respeitos humanos e empurrando-os de roldão aos abismos. ”

[close] A group dedicated to reading books in their original language (Usually these are books translated into English). I thought it would be simpler to concentrate on classics, but anything is allowed as long as the book is originally in that language. Feel free to recommend books as well.

[close] This group, dedicated to Portuguese-American and Portuguese-Canadian Literature, focuses on the increasingly present literary conversation between the Portuguese Diaspora, American, and Canadian culture at large. Except for a few regions of these two countries where their presence is remarkable, the Portuguese presence in the United States and Canada has slipped from the public consciousness, and the few representations of Portuguese-Americans and Portuguese-Canadians in popular culture have obscured their image. In this group, we discuss how Portuguese-American and Portuguese-Canadian fiction, poetry, memoir, oral history, theater and performance interrogate the stereotyped portrayals of Portuguese-Americans and Portuguese-Canadians and foster genuine historical inquiry and understanding. Here, we explore the potential of literature to enable the recovery of a forgotten, even repressed, historical past. Our aim is to foster a deeper and more complex appreciation for the importance of Portuguese-American and Portuguese-Canadian texts in the study of Portuguese culture, American culture, Canadian culture and the space of the Portuguese diaspora.
