A picture book combines visual and verbal narratives in a book format, most often aimed at young children. The images in picture books use a range of media such as oil paints, acrylics, watercolor and pencil. Two of the earliest books with something like the format picture books still retain now were Heinrich Hoffmann's Struwwelpeter from 1845 and Beatrix Potter's The Tale of Peter Rabbit from 1902. Some of the best-known picture books are Robert McCloskey's Make Way for Ducklings, Dr. Seuss' The Cat In The Hat, and Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are. “ He was like one of those pictures full of small errors, the kind you could only pick out by searching the image from every angle, and even then, a few always slipped by. On the surface, Eli seemed perfectly normal, but now and then Victor would catch a crack, a sideways glance, a moment when his roommate's face and his words, his look and his meaning, would not line up. Those fleeting slices fascinated Victor. It was like watching two people, one hiding in the other's skin. And their skin was al ...more ”
“ After we've been dancing awhile and need a breather, we walk off the dance floor. I whip out my cell and say, "Pose for me." The first picture I take is of him trying to pose like a cool bad boy. It makes me laugh. I take another one before he can strike a pose this time. "Let's take one of the both of us," he says, pulling me close. I press my cheek against his while he takes my cell and puts it as far away as he can reach, then freezes this perfect moment with a click. After the picture is tak ...more ”

[close] This is a support group for those who read, write, or would like to write children's books. You don't have to be a children's book author to belong. You might just want to share a great book that you've read. You might just want some advice on a good read. For authors working on projects, this can include giving helpful advice, reviewing other author books (as long as it's non-reciprocal--see rules), asking for help, and everything else associated with children's books. Have fun!

[close] This is a place for authors to share their stories with how their writing has played a significant role in a child's life. It is also a place for knowledge sharing in writing or illustrating a picture book. Feel free to also post surveys to help you decide on the path to take to maximize your sales.
