“ Perhaps the greatest faculty our minds possess is the ability to cope with pain. Classic thinking teaches us of the four doors of the mind, which everyone moves through according to their need. First is the door of sleep. Sleep offers us a retreat from the world and all its pain. Sleep marks passing time, giving us distance from the things that have hurt us. When a person is wounded they will often fall unconscious. Similarly, someone who hears traumatic news will often swoon or faint. This is ...more ”

[close] Anti-Racism Reading Group for mental health professionals. Thank you so much for your interest in this group. I'm thrilled that others are willing to support each other as we do this important work. I want to start by saying I don't claim any ownership or leadership of this group, and I think we can make decisions together as a group. Having said that, my intention is that this group is explicitly anti-racist and explicitly intersectional feminist. These past few days (May 2020), many of us have probably been thinking something like "I know that I need to do something, but I don't know what to do." Black leaders have been pretty consistent in their advice to White people: White people need to learn. So I spread invitations to this group primarily to White people. Not to centre us, but because we are the ones who need to do this work. But we are not going to limit membership or participation based on race or any other identifying factor. I invited clinical psychologists (including students) and other mental health professionals in the hopes that our discussions can include themes related to our professional work. Please introduce yourself, vote in a poll, start or respond to topics in the forum, and add books to the group shelf! You may need to "verify your email" with Goodreads before it will let you post in the group.
