The Inheritance Game is an amusing and often outrageous novel that follows the story of Dean Williams, who thinks all his dreams have come true when he unexpectedly inherits a ¿2 million house from a recently-deceased friend, Dougie. However the catch is that the terms of the inheritance state Dean must move into the house with seven of his friends and successfully complete ten challenges that have been set by his late friend before ownership is transferred to him. One challenge is released per week by the deceased's solicitor and it quickly becomes evident that Dougie had a sick sense of humour as majority of the challenges require Dean and his friends to do things that most people would need to be paid to do. As the weeks progress the challenges become more extreme and outrageous and test not only the principles and morals of the group but also how far Dean is prepared to go in order to get his hands on the money. Alongside the weekly challenges are a myriad of other storylines revolving around the exploits of the eight guys living in the house. These storylines are humorous and frequently outrageous but have elements familiar to anyone who has ever drunk too much and done something they later regretted. The Inheritance Game follows the friendship, relationships and sex lives of a group of eight guys in their mid twenties and aims to cater for the twenty and thirty-something market in the same way as Bridget Jones, but with more of a focus on the male perspective. The central inheritance storyline is laced with intriguing moral dilemmas which make for compelling reading and are designed to make the reader question what they would do in a similar situation. Alongside the central plot are a variety of other storylines which are often outrageous and will make the reader laugh / cringe at the characters' antics. Each chapter represents a different day and as a result they are deliberately designed to be relatively short and self contained.
MMD Best Books of Summer post: My entire family is devouring the Inheritance Games series! They’re fast-paced and clever and it’s really fun to have my husband and kids all sharing a common reading experience with me! I don’t remember which child started it, but I wasn’t the first to discover the series!
The story is like a depraved version of the movie the game, with a bunch of twenty something guys getting up to so much crazy stuff. The premise is a series of dares laid out by a friend of the main character after his death to earn himself a large sum of money. The dates are crazy things that people probably wouldn't think up for themselves and you wonder each time whether he will go through with it or not. That's what kept me turning the page. The twists at the end were good and overall it was not a bad book. Now some complaints. This book needs a good edit due to words being left out, some words put in that don't need to be there and some misspelling here and there. Also, some of the stories that the group of guys get up to seem just thrown in to add more pages, like Glynns fiasco while out to dinner with his girlfriend. Although it gives a chuckle, it didn't really have much point and didn't seem finished but was never brought up again. There is humor and suspense in this story and I liked it personally. It would probably be most appealing to men, I don't know who I would recommend it too but I enjoyed it well enough
When Dean's friend Dougie dies, Dean finds out his friend was surprisingly rich. At the reading of the will he finds out he and seven friends can stay at an expensive and modern mansion for ten weeks in order to complete a series of challenges. If the challenges are all completed according to the will, Dean inherits the house. But, can Dean make it through the series of increasingly perverse, immoral, and often illegal challenges to win the mansion?
