I’m smart, but I’m also awkward and somewhat socially inept—forever doomed to live in the shadow of my dead brother.
My job as research engineer is amazing, though, and recently, I’ve managed to make some friends in my hometown of Forestville.
But when the wrong people show too much interest in my latest invention, my boss wants me protected. Despite my fierce protests, I end up back in Forestville. With a bodyguard who poses as my boyfriend.
Quillon is nothing like I had expected. He’s my opposite, but we connect in ways I never saw coming, and for the first time, I don’t feel alone. He takes care of me like no one ever has.
Oh, and he’s also extremely hot, which is fascinating because I’ve always thought I was straight. Apparently not.
But is this just a temporary thing or could it be forever?
Protecting the Nerd is the fourth book in the Forestville Silver Foxes series, a contemporary small-town MM romance series featuring hot silver foxes and the men who fall in love with them. Each book can be read as a standalone. Please check the trigger warnings in the front of the book.
Would you like the long or the short version of my bio?
The short? You got it.
I write steamy gay romance books and I love it. I also love reading books. Books are everything.
How was that?
A little more detail? Gotcha.
I started writing my first stories when I was a teen…on a freaking typewriter. I still have these, and they’re adorably romantic. And bad, haha. Fear of failing kept me from following my dream to become a romance author, so you can imagine how proud and ecstatic I am that I finally overcame my fears and self doubt and did it. I adore my genre because I love writing and reading about flawed, strong men who are just a tad broken..but find their happy ever after anyway.
My favorite books to read are pretty much all MM/gay romances as long as it has a happy end. Kink is a plus… Aside from that, I also read a lot of nonfiction and not just books on writing. Popular psychology is a favorite topic of mine and so are self help and sociology.
Hobbies? Ain’t nobody got time for that. Just kidding. I love traveling, spending time near the ocean, and hiking. But I love books more.

Genius (nerd) York Coombe, we know from the author's prior Silver Foxes books, is a 42 year old software programmer who's still dealing with from being bullied almost non-stop by his older brother. York's parents have ignored him almost from childhood to favor and memorialize his older brother. So York has some issues, including he doesn't like people and only has one friend- Fir. However now the FBI and the US government are concerned for York, who's programmed some very high-end classified security software. It seems someone has leaked York's connection to the software and now foreign agents are after him, threatening to kidnap, or worse, at all costs to get that software.
Enter 49 year old Quillon, employed by one of best private security companies in the US. He's arrived in Seattle to be the private bodyguard for York. But upon laying eyes on York, he's very attracted to the man. He's out and proud but disconcerted because he's very professional and doesn't want to compromise his position or York's safety. Quillon says nothing to York, but one day he's in the shower when York walks into the bathroom and sees him... in all his male nakedness... and both men realize the other is very attracted. Which is a surprised for York because he's been straight his whole life, despite having little success with women.
It was clear the author based her character York on the nerd-behavior of Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory, but toned down some of the excessive traits. However York was fairly well developed as a character. Quillon, on the other hand, was not. We get a little backstory involving a younger sister who passed when he was 15, and a very awkward and weird conversation about some of his sexual escapades when he was younger. That's about the extent of development for the two, except the so-professional bodyguard has a very unlikely emotional meltdown in the final quarter of the book when York gets kidnapped (Don't come at me about spoilers, you knew that would happen, right?) Also worth pointing out, when Quillon decides to start calling York "nerdy" as a pet (relationship) nickname, I cringed every time. It was so uncomfortably bad. Their relationship lacked depth, once they started fucking, it was instant-love and they were gonna get married and have kids within the same day.
The first half of this was decent, setting up the story. The second half was not. Right about 50% when the two first sleep together, all plot momentum is lost and the book nosedives into the Boring Abyss. The sex scenes, dominating most of the book from 50-80%, were so generic and bland I had to skim to finish the book.
The first half was about 3 stars, the second half is barely 1 star. Split the difference, it barely earns 2 stars.
I'm think going to have to stop reading this author.
Nerdy engineer and his bodyguard. I loved that they were 43 and 49. It was a bit sappy but kinda sweet too. Nothing brilliant and amazing but a nice read.
This book was super sweet considering it was dealing with a serious plotline that everything else hung on.
I did smile at the crossover with Nora's White House series but I was also a little disappointed with the premise of the threat to York in the first place.
But that's a personal viewpoint and it doesn't affect the excellence of the storytelling itself, which felt credible and didn't go off into ridiculous scenarios and situations. The big impact point was very well done, the pacing ramped up beautifully to that moment and I could feel the fear and frustration from Quillon as everything went to Hell.
Both men are wonderfully crafted. I've been a fan of York's right from the start, especially when it was revealed just what he'd had to deal with growing up, and I really loved Quill for him. He might have had a bit of an instalove reaction to his nerdy protectee, but it felt believable.
I also absolutely LOVED that York didn't need rescuing, but he used his incredible knowledge to get himself out of the situation and that he was able to stall the bad guys repeatedly until he'd got all his ducks in place.
Overall though, this was another excellent entry in Nora's Forestville series. While book one remains my favourite, I love reading about mature characters finding their HEA when they might have given up hope and I adore the small town vibes of the series as a whole.
I'm intrigued as to who will be next as there weren't really any hints given in this one for what might be coming up.
#ARC kindly received from the author, I am voluntarily leaving a review
This was another win for me in the series! ✌🏻 I'm not sure if I liked it more than book three or about the same. It was a different kind of story. York and Quillon were super cute together though, and I'm a sucker for a good bodyguard/fake dating trope. Most of all, I'm glad York got his much deserved HEA and some resolution with his horrible parents 💙
I enjoyed the audio for this one more than the previous book, mainly because there was no Portuguese spoken by Michael Dean 😂 All of my previous comments still apply though. Character voices for cameos are whatever comes out in the moment. It keeps you on your toes 🤣 I've also learned to laugh at the fact that Michael Dean just rolls with whatever pronunciation hits at the time. In every book in the series, there have been several common words that he just says whatever. I don't know if he doesn't realize it, or just can't be bothered to go back and try again, but it happens often enough not to consider it a fluke. I've never heard the word "thermos" pronounced like he pronounced it, but alas, it's just another way to keep you on your toes 😆
I was so so so happy to get back to Forestville. We love it when older mcs find love. This series has been great so far, hitting different big topics, and this was no exception.
York was significantly bullied by his brother all throughout his youth. When his older brother dies in combat, his parents are frozen in time. They've built the narrative of the perfect protector son, and they've forgotten and ignored York. Now, in his 40s, he's forced to go back to Forestville with a pretend boyfriend who is actually his bodyguard.
Quillon is the ex Marine current bodyguard. He knew York's brother and is invested in finding out why York is the way he is.
Can a genius and a bodyguard fall in love? You bet they can.
I love a good bodyguard falling for their principal. I love a good nerd/jock trope, too. Together? CHEF'S KISS.
I loved getting to know York and Quillon. I loved seeing the mcs from previous books. I loved being back in Forestville.
If you're looking for a wonderful friend group, found family, small town goodness and a 🔥 shower scene - PROTECTING THE NERD is definitely for you.
Rating: 4.5 Steam: 3 PoV: dual, 1st person Genre: contemporary romance, MM Tropes / tags: bodyguard, sexual discovery, small town
I was really excited about getting York's story - I mean, who doesn't love a good bodyguard / protectee romance together with some opposites attract, sexual discovery and suspense?
While York wasn't a part of the friend group in Forestville growing up, his brother was and there had been some mentions from the earlier books that York had been bullied by him as a kid. It broke my heart to read what York had been put through, even if the story didn't go in to too much detail, and I was so upset with his parents for not believing him. It was sweet to see him slowly realising that the guys had adopted him in to their group and genuinely cared about him.
Quillion and York had an easy connection from the start and I enjoyed seeing how things started to build between them, going from strangers to fake boyfriends and then more, while still being bodyguard / protectee. York's cluelessness was endearing, and I liked how Quillion understood him and took care of him so that York could focus on his work. I loved the shower scene, it was a lot of fun to see Quillion’s amusement and York slowly figuring out that he probably wasn’t as straight as he thought he was.
The suspense kept increasing and while I knew from early on what was coming, I was still swept up in the story and the threat against York. I really liked the conclusion to it though, and the crossover from the White House Men series was a very nice surprise!
Protecting the Nerd was an anticipated addition to the Forestville Silver Foxes, and I loved Quillion and York's story! I’m so fond of this series - the found family with the small town setting is great, and I'll keep my fingers crossed for more books in this series.
- Thanks to Abbie Nicole for the opportunity to read and review this book. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.
I was quite excited for this book. York was a character we had met a few times in previous books but who was for the most part, a mystery. Quillon seemed like a really intriguing counterpart to York from the beginning, I enjoyed how he was so kind and accepting of York’s differences. The plot in general was interesting and very different than the other books but a bit more exciting so I really liked how everything began.
Unfortunately I started to lose interest once the two MMCs were actually together. All the things that I really enjoyed about their varied personalities seemed to disappear and suddenly everything was perfectly amicable and easy. Their conversations were a bit strange and read very robotic, and most of the time I didn’t think either of them really spoke or thought in a way that fit to their age.
York as a character is super complex. I liked reading about how his brain worked and how Quillon seemed to understand what he needed. But it’s also clear how the author wrote him that there is an aspect to his personality that reads very neurodivergent and I can’t tell if the author unintentionally wrote a character that way or if they just didn’t feel like mentioning it further in the story. It felt like a missed opportunity that nothing was mentioned or delved into further.
All in all I did enjoy the book, but I can’t ignore that York and Quillon together read kind of boring! Add in quite a few typos and disjointed conversations and you’ve got a book that is entertaining but missing the mark.

DNF at 45% The more I read, the more turned off I get :( The MCs are supposed to be well in their forties but they don't feel like that; instead they 'sound' like they're not a day above 25. Very immature, very sweet, very touchy-feely for just male friends (at 45% our nerd hasn't realised he's either gay/bi or interested in his bodyguard). And don't get me started on Quillon falling in love in record time just by observing York and how tormented he was :( Nothing clicks for me, not the chemistry, not the characters and even the brother's vileness sounds way overboard, serving only as a reason for Quillon to pity poor & abused York. Putting it aside for now.
I've enjoyed The Silver Fox Series but this one was, well, dull and boring. Sorry 😬 l didn't buy York suddenly being gay for Quillon. And the nickname Nerdy. Seriously 🙄 Perhaps the author needs to move on from her silver fox's. Sorry this is a yeah but nah from me.

5/5 stars! How have I not read a Nora Phoenix book before now? This was sooooo good. It had everything. Small town vibes. Vulnerability and heart. Slight age gap. Protector. And Russian intrigue. Off to read every book Nora has ever written.
Yall - I have to DNF this. I was enjoying the story for the most part, but I cringe every time Quillon uses the pet name "Nerdy" for York. The phrase "Suck me Nerdy" is not sexy and it just makes my brain itch.
I have a number of freebies on my Kindle I need to go through. Most get dnf'd by the second chapter, this one I liked. Since they're KU, will try another.
This was just okay for me. It started off well, but then got a little boring and predictable. It’s a slow burn that turns into medium spice, but it’s all packed in so quickly that I was even a little bored by their intimate scenes. And don’t even get me started on Quillon’s nickname for York! “Nerdy”???…so awkward. I cringed every time I had to read it.
There’s also a disconnect for me to York. I just couldn’t feel any of his emotions coming off the page. And then, boom, he’s in love with Quill? I just couldn’t buy it. Quillon, on the other hand, was more relatable and I believed his feelings for York. But, his character lacked the development that York’s had.
The drama doesn’t happen until 80% or so in, and then you get some very long-winded internal dialogues that really dragged, and I just wanted to finish as quickly as possible.
I’ve read other books by this author, and if I can recall correctly, they all pretty much fall in the 3-4 star category. So, not bad, but could be better. This one just needed more feeling and passion. I did love that they became close and fell in love (and confessed that love) before getting physical. But, the swoon-y gooeyness that I want to feel when that happens just wasn’t there for me.
It’s technically written well. I think just some minor errors and punctuation issues were present, but nothing too severe that it took me out of the story.
I am so happy to be back in Forestville and this was my favorite trip here so far! I absolutely adored York and Quillon's story. Everything about it just worked for me. The attraction between the two was there from the start, with York taking a little longer to recognize it since he's always identified as straight. There was a delicious slow burn as they became closer and closer while living together. I enjoyed their friendship as much as I did their romance. There was also some wonderful scenes with York and Fir, as well as the rest of the men we've come to love along the way. I loved how they had York's back. I loved how everyone was open and honest and communicated with each other, York and Quill especially, but all the friends too! There was also a small suspense plot as Quill and others were trying to keep York safe from people trying to get their hands on the technology York developed. Fans of the author's white house men series will be thrilled like I was to see Coulson too! I adored how York put his big brain to work to get himself out of trouble. There was just the perfect balance of romance, friendship, and action that just made this such a well rounded story that I thoroughly enjoyed!
Wow -- I know we've read a little about what York went through growing up with the Silver Foxes' other best friend as an abusive brother, but wow. And what shitty parents! Reading his confrontation with them was very satisfying. Also the way he MacGyvered his way out of his kidnapping!? NERDS ARE SO HOT. Quillon realizing that he wants to be York’s caretaker, to do for him what his parents never did, makes me a little misty. Could these two be any more suited for each other? The sex is pretty hot, too.
Note: Phoenix LOVES giving her characters unique names and I LOVE to find the meanings and how they relate to the story. Quillon (Kill-en) means crossing swords (heh) or strong. And he's an ex-Marine in private security. York's name meaning is boring -- from the yew estate.
Tropes: bodyguard, fake relationship, friends to lovers, opposites attract
