This is a small, informative guide. It is the perfect size for children's hands. The language is not overly complicated so perfect for a relatively young reader. A wide range of minerals and rocks are mentioned. Next to each one is a short paragraph describing it and a photographic image, as well as a small circle to tick if you have it in your collection.

I've owned Rocks & Minerals for many years and it is often in my backpack when we are out rock hunting. I look for rocks to use in jewelry so it is helpful to know the type of rocks that I am finding and this simple little book gives pictures, has an index and a glossary telling how difficult it is to find each kind, which is helpful too.

I've also used this book with children when they bring rocks to me and look for the right one in the book. It teaches them to use it as a reference, a skill useful for a lifetime. It doesn't have all rocks so we often use other sources to expand research skills and give themt he knowledge they want.
