The book is a collection of Arthur Grimble's field notes and early writings, which his daughter has put together in book form, which some linking pieces and a large number of illustrations. Rosemary Grimble has added references to recent work on the origins of Pacific Island races, many of which support her father's own beliefs. She has also included extract from recent books on bird migration, because it has been suggested that on some of their voyages the Pacific Islanders may have followed migration birds.

Better insight into the Gilbert Islands and the culture but should not be confused with Banaban history. Grimble was a Colonial Resident Commissioner and a poetic writer who unfortunately rewrote the history of the Banabans to suit the Colonial government of the times.
