Love this new duology from Charlie!
I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Ever since I finished the first book, Spellbreaker, I was dying to dive into Spellmaker. Luckily, I had the eARC of the sequel to the duology and dove into it the first chance I got. I'm not going to lie, I finally got the answers to some of my confusing questions. Doesn't necessarily mean that I wasn't confused by some of the things happening in this one - because I was. It just means that I got the answers I was looking f

    Spellbreaker, Book 2

This is a book I requested from NetGalley and the review is voluntary. A word of warning, read book one first! It has spoilers in it of book one. This is a world of complex magical systems. There are four types of magic and training needed to become a master. There is also Spellbreakers, which are gal Elsie is. All Spellmakers and Spellbreakers must be registered. Elsie is not nor has she been since age 11 when she accidentally unraveled a spel

    tl;dr: 'Spellbreaker'

I read 'Spellmaker' & 'Spellbreaker' back to back to ensure that I understood the entire story. Elsie's arc gets a partial conclusion in this duology. The focus in Spellmaker is the conclusion of the romance as well as discovering & exposing the villain behind the various attacks.

I liked the magic system in both the books. The classes - people who can make spells as well as people who can destroy spells - is quite unique. The way the two classes combine with each other in c

This might be my new favorite book by Holmberg! It flowed beautifully, I loved the characters and the story moved quickly with just the right amount romance!

Wow, what a story! This duology is amazing!

Having read the first one, I was anxious to see how Elsie's and Bacchus' story would be resolved. This one picks up exactly where the other one left off—they know who the villain is but can't get to her yet.

It also starts with Elsie in prison after having revealed her powers. But Bacchus doesn't rest until she's out and he devises a plan which throws the both of them into marriage. They each have their doubts and think they're a burden to the other, bu

This story is one I could not stop reading. Every time I had to put it down, my mind wandered back to it, desperate to find out what was going to happen next. There were so many twists and turns throughout the duet, and the unique magic in this world was hard to resist.

I loved how Elsie grew throughout the story. Never weak to begin with, she grew stronger and stronger with every page. I loved seeing her magical abilities grow, and the way she broke spells in the middle of a fight was quite simp

I have to say, I liked this a lot more than the first book. Now that we've established the characters and world, the plot could focus on more of the magic and Elsie's relationship with Bacchus. I really enjoy the two of them together and I think they make a great couple. I also liked seeing more spells and the different specialties the spellmakers have.

Bacchus is a great male lead, he's strong and confident and doesn't let others push him down because of his race. He cares a lot for Elsie and s

I had been in a brief reading slump when I read the first one, and it captured my attention in the best possible way. So when I found out the second book wouldn't be coming out until March 2021, I spent days trying to find something as compelling to read. I rarely start unfinished series for the exact reason that I don't like to wait for sequels! Imagine my surprise when I found Spellmaker on NetGalley - and could read it now!

It's not quite as broad scope as the first, which works in its favor.

This was a delightful conclusion to the duology. I enjoyed Elsie's growth and her character development. Bacchus is so sweet and encouraging with her. I liked that Elsie is portrayed as being competent while still retaining her femininity and poise. I think the magic system was fairly well developed and fit nicely with the setting. Overall, it was an enjoyable read. ...more

Loved it! The perfect amount of romance, plenty of mystery, and no cliffhangers! Charlie's writing is amazing and always pulls me right into the fantasy worlds she creates. Let me start by saying I am a huge Charlie Holmberg fan! She was this knack for creating strong but relatable female characters and fantastical magical worlds that are unique, creative and yet easy to immerse yourself in.

When I read Spellbreaker, I immediately fell in love with Elsie and was dying for the conclusion of her story. The villain in this duology is great in that their motives aren't malevolent but the actions they take to achieve their goal are. I love a story with a moral gray area

I enjoyed the first book, but didn't love it. There were quite some things that didn't work so well for me, but here... here things get better. Way, way better.
First thing first, the characters really came alive in there. Elsie felt more real here, and I could relate to her way more. And Bacchus and Ogden? Oh my! They finally found some backbone and I was so so glad! I love my characters with so

I liked this one more then book 1. I liked the growing romance between her and Bacchus. I liked the way that even friends weren't really friends in this one. It was interesting to see her 'train' to become a spell breaker although she has for years to save herself from prison. I liked how Elise grows within the book and not just by admitting her feelings for Bacchus or with her magic but she seems to go from the teenager to young lady and it was nice to read. ...more

Spellbreaker was a wonderful novel that introduced us to Elsie, Ogden, and Bacchus and their magical, political, and divided version of England. Spellmaker takes us further into the murder mystery and possible romance between Elsie and Bacchus.

As with all of Charlie Holmberg's books that I've read so far, she jumps into the action, world building, and characters right away. Her writing is so clear and easy to follow despite being packed and descriptive. The world of magic is so good! She gives u

⁷I received an arc from netgallery in exchange for an honest review.

Unfortunately, I started reading the second before I realised it wasn't the first book in the series (certainly not the first time I have done this). Dispite this, I had no trouble at all keeping up with what was happening.

This book got me within the first few pages and I'm obsessed with Charlie's writing style. It's descriptive and yet to the point. I loved the trope she used, pretending to be married in order to avoid prosec

Spellbreaker was the first Charlie N. Holmberg book I read and I got it through an Amazon prime first reads selection. I was lucky to receive an advanced copy of Spellmaker, the conclusion of the duology from NetGalley. This book is due for release on 9 March 2021.

Spellmaker is the second of the Spellbreaker duology, and it complements the first pretty well. It develops on what was left vague in the first book, while also being a fairly intriguing romantic historical fantasy-mystery (wow, that’s a mashup) in its own right. It did take a bit to get back into the swing of things, as it has been a little while since reading the last one, but once I did, I was pretty happy.

The magic feels a bit more developed in this one, being an element that was fleshed ou

I'm not sure what's with these books and the fast paced endings. They go by a little too quickly for my liking, with all the excitement happening at once. While I'm glad there was a resolution, I can't say I enjoyed this book as much as the first because of the pacing.

This book takes off pretty much where the last one left off. Only, this time, Elsie finds herself in a bit more trouble. Bacchus offers her a way out though, in

The second book in the Spellbreaker duology begins with Elsie's arrest. Unregistered spellbreakers are horribly illegal and can even be put to death. However, she has new Master Bacchus Kelsey on her side. He manages to free her from jail by swearing that her gifts are new and also that he intends to marry her.

While Elsie suffers from her low self-esteem and abandonment issues, the major villain of the story is not letting up on her so far undetermined goals. Master Lily Merton is still trying

What I love about this books is that they're not leaning on the romance bits, I'm loving finally getting some answers that the previous book left, but I'm thrilled about the new mysteries, this is a strong sequel, thought I still like the first one better, I liked the introduction of new characters, the pacing plot wise and the villain, thought I think the author could go a bit stronger villain wise, and the magic syst

This is a review for both Spellbreaker and Spellmaker: The first book, Spellbreaker, has thousands of helpful reviews already, so I'll simply add my recommendation for fantasy fans. Spellmaker of course include the same main characters, and both books are quite engaging and imaginative. Once again, the author's talent shines thru -- She knows how to effectively tell an interesting tale with well written characters, which is why she has a large following. Good stuff.

This action packed conclusion to the Spellmaker duology was filled with twists and revelations that made me really hooked! I'm a little bit sad that this is only a duology and not a trilogy, but it was also the perfect length so...I guess it's fine. 😂

There were a couple of things that happened that were a little bit cliche or that I'd seen in Holmberg's previous books, but overall it was a fantastic read.

Lovely sequel! In my opinion this was even better than the first. More romance and Elsie is a lot more likable in this book. The plot and world continues to enchant. I love the idea of Spellmakers and Spellbreakers. Plus the hero of this series is a nice breath of fresh air from the typical male leads in most books these days. Overall, a very enjoyable duology.
I didn’t simply read this book, I inhaled it. Objectively, I preferred the first volume, but I was too excited and it is indeed quite the page turner. With almost all the major revelations taking place a the end of the first book, there is not much mystery in this one. It’s more action packed and it has its share of exciting twists. This being said, the budding romance between Elsie and Bacchus shifting to light speed with a rather common trope, I didn’t like very much. In my opinion, the fake-m ...more

The conclusion to SPELLBREAKER, by Charlie N Holmberg, SPELLMAKER is a satisfying conclusion to an imaginative tale.
Opened ended, Holmberg left the world available to play-in come the future.

While all major plot points were solved, the main focus was on the romance rather than the mystery, which was quickly resolved in a convenient package. Loveable characters old and new join in on the adventures, with quite a few shockingly fun twists.
