WOW. From my very mediocre reactions to the cover to the fact that I entered it during a reading slump, Kingdom of Exiles blew me away with its readability, world building, and overall reading enjoyment.
It's been a long time since I've loved a new paranormal romance. I think as I've shifted to more adult mystery/thrillers and YA novels, it's hard to revert back to the often formulaic nature of the average paranormal romance. Kingdom of ...more
The writing was smart, and I can see the author’s potential. Even though it felt like a debut novel at times, which it is – the plot and writing sounded more like a YA novel. The story was a bit stilted at times, and didn’t flow as it could have. Nevertheless I read it in short ...more

When it came to us, there were just too many thorns. But damn if I didn’t want to cut them all down and see what grew.
The first half of this book was a little slow going for me. Thankfully once I felt comfortable in Maxym M. Martineau's world of beasts, charmers, and assassins, I was all in. It was loaded with action, adventure, and a ...more
Do you like Fantastic Beasts, Assassin’s Creed.... and Pokémon? Sounds intriguing?
This is the book you never knew you needed! It's also surprisingly very good!
The only thing I can encourage you to do is pick this up asap.
This novel just ticks all the right boxes for me:
Slow burn romance

Fairy Tail (Hiro Mashima) meets Sarah J.Maas. We follow the two protagonists in Dual pov: Leena, a beast charmer and Noc a lethal assassin. Leena is a fugitive and Noc is cursed and somehow they end up meeting because Noc is hired to kill her. The premise is fun, the magic system and world-building are interesting. However I had some issues.
Leena is supposed to be a badass that must not be underestimated; ...more

To give you an idea of how much I adored this book, I actually read it twice since I received it back in February and I’m already planning future rereads, so yeah, so say that I enjoyed it would be an understatement

MAGICAL BEASTS WITH ASSASSINS AND A CUP OF ROMANCE? I'M ALL HERE FOR IT!
I don't know where I should begin. Everything about this book was mind-blowing. I picked it up expecting some cheesy romance with average beasts show up here and there but boy I WAS COMPLETELY WRONG. When the premise ...more
Leena is a magical beast charmer. She is extremely gifted but in exile from her people, for a crime she didn’t commit. The only way to live is to sell the beasts she charms. The problem with that, if she gets caught by her people, they’ll execute her. But someone really wants her already and it brings Noc, a top assassin for hire after her.
I loved the world building and the imaginative beasts. Magic, mayhem and sizzling chemistry, Kingdom of ...more

First book in the Beast Charmer series
Leena is an exiled beast charmer. She makes a living catching low-grade beasts to stay alive and has made many enemies of Charmers and humans alike. Her latest enemy has put a hit on her and this assassin is like no other. The Cruor are assassins that have been raised from the dead and can control the shadows. After Leena defeats a Cruor and nearly kills him, the leader—Noc—decides to use this hit for his...more
Unfortunately, this book was not for me. I did not connect with our dude Noc which soured my relationship with this book overall. I wanted a romance i could root for, but this was not it for me. That doesn't mean I don't think other people will and can enjoy this book because i really do think they can. But I felt myself disliking him, and finding him annoying and not lovable at all. Which honestly is my main gripe with this ...more

BEAST CHARMER!! That is totally a major selling point for me. I also really loved the idea that this was urban fantasy... Which upon reading I found to be totally not true. Well the best designation of genre would be fantasy romance. Yes, its totally romance set in a fantasy world. It has the feel of an urban fantasy and lots of animal action to back that up but the plot it wholly romance.
The title is pretty good. We do have a few ...more
April 2019: I just got approved for this ARC and couldn't be more EXCITED! It's being blurbed as Fantastic Beasts meets Assassin's Creed and I AM HERE FOR IT!

Kingdom of Exiles was the book I’ve been looking for, for the LONGEST time! I loved playing Pokémon as a child and still love it to pieces now and this has such a great vibe that reminded me of the Pokémon world and it’s games. Have you guys ever played the rescues games on gameboy or the explorers of time/darkness/space for DS? It was like that, with a little bit of the ranger, and of course, the usual regular Pokémon games. ...more

4,5 beautiful stars to this majestic beast of a book. I don’t think there’s anything better for me than discovering a new favorite within the PNR/fantasy romance genre, so I'm really happy I can add Kingdom of Exiles to my new found favorites and that I just experienced a most wonderful reading experience. When the description first mentioned that Kingdom of Exiles is a combination of Assassins Creed and Fantastic Beasts, I was dubious. Is that even possible? What would that even seem like? I just couldn't get into this one... and I really, really wanted to!
This was one of my most anticipated reads this year so when I got sent an ARC from the publisher I was ecstatic!
Don't get me wrong here, I very much enjoyed a lot of it. It reminded me so much of Pokemon & Fantastic Beasts which is a huge strong point. What I didn't enjoy too much was the romance in it. I felt it was a little over the ...more

This is the first book of a trilogy and the set up took some time for me to wrap my head around. It took almost half of the story before I really got into the swing of things and became invested in the characters. I’m glad I stuck with it because that’s when the story really picked up speed! The myriad of beasts Leena could conjure and/or charm was my favorite part of the story. From cute, cuddly, and wily to ferociously protective, I never knew what Leena had up her sleeve! As to the ...more
Kingdom of Exiles introduces us to an exciting new world with roots firmly in the realm of fantasy while still holding on to a little UF feel. It's fresh and creative with a strong romance thread at its core, a well crafted cast of characters, a quest, and a mystery. What more could I ask for?
The book is told from the alternating POVs of Noc and Leena. Noc is the leader of the Cruor, a guild of assassins populated by men and women raised from the dead. (They're ...more
