This 5th and last book of Cross's Health and Happiness Society series resonated with me because it dove into the mid-life period, which I am living. I am always on the lookout for these "second coming-of-age" books. Books that show the depth, grit, and self-love earned from years of bittersweet living. What was Lost was one of those books.

Mira Montgomery, the oldest member of the Health and Happiness Society, is going through a dark night of the soul. Life's adversities have stunned

The last book in the Health and Happiness society is Mira's story. Reading the previous books, I thought I knew what to expect from What Was Lost, but I was wrong! Mira is older than the other women and dealing with realizing her life isn't what she'd planned for it to be at all. She has lost her husband, parents, and now her only sibling in death; her younger friends are all beginning exciting new chapters in their own lives; she is feeling used and discarded; her business is being threatened a ...more

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I absolutely love Katie Cross, her words draw me into another world, make me feel the emotion of her characters and leave me bereft when her tales end. Long live Katie!

I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. (Sigh). Katie Cross. A young author who could not have experienced all this loss and grief wrote a beautiful novel about it and finding yourself in the process. That sounds so cliche. But seriously....she delves into the psyche of a grieving middle-ages woman and pulls emotions from you. She says things on the pages that you may be scared to say out loud...but they are true emotions and thoughts that we all have, or at lea ...more

Mira’s story is the last of the Health & Happiness Society’s stories. This is a story about loss and how hard it is for Mira to continuously deal with the losses in her life. From miscarriages to the loss of her parents and husband, Mira has lost so much. In her story we see more loss and pain coming her way, and she tries to deal with it by pulling away from her friends. It hurts her to continue to watch them grow and gain more in their own lives, while she feels only pain and loss in hers. ...more

What Was Lost is the heartwrenching, powerful last novel of the Health and Happiness Society, and I am so sad to see it ending. That being said, it was such a great way to end this series. It really dives into the world of Mira and pieces together things that we only got to see brief glimmers of through the other books. Katie is a mastermind. I feel like I know all these women in real life and have loved watching them grow. What Was Lost really shows Mira going through such a transition point in ...more

Another amazing book by Katie Cross! Every book in the Health and Happiness Society are amazing and I’m able to relate to each character in some way. What Was Lost is about grief and about going through the grieving process with Mira. Mira is one who always has everything together and is always there for everyone else, but what happens when she needs others to be there for her? This book will make you think and reflect on your own life and the relationships that you have with others. It will als ...more

Let’s start with what this story won’t do: It won’t be the answer to all your questions. It won’t erase your pain or painful memories. Now let’s talk about what this story WILL do: It will help you see some light. It will give you hope and help ease some burdens you’ve been carrying. It will help you to be thankful and appreciative because those are two very different things. But most importantly, you will gain insight into your own story. Understanding your own story is critical. Understanding ...more

All the books in this Health & Happiness Society books have resonated with me, and this book was no exception. I was sort of dreading reading it because I didn't want the series to end, but of course, once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. Mira was oh-so-relatable as the oldest of the society, and also as a widow, but what she was going through could be true of someone of any age.

I love Katie Cross' writing because she creates characters that I want to be friends with and she also

This is such a beautiful and raw book, moving and inspiring in one. As with the other books in the Health and Happiness Society series, What Was Lost is much more than just a well-written book with realistic characters. It is a story about loss, grief, rage, coping, catharsis, empowerment, acceptance and healing, written with great compassion, from the perspective of Mira who has been through more personal tragedy than anyone should have to experience by 51. Katie Cross is superb at making the r ...more

Wow… Mira’s story is deep, heartbreaking, intense, and so very uplifting at the end. I understand some of what she went through. Having lost my mother, several close friends, and several close family members, I understand grief. To have lost a spouse and children and siblings? I can’t bear to think of what that pain must feel like. And to think I always thought Mira (in the previous four books) to be a giddy, happy, go-getting southern girl. Like Bitsy’s story, Mira’s threw me for quite a loop… ...more

Final book of the Health and happiness series is an amazing one. You can't help but fall in love with Mira as she struggles with life day in and day out. As a reader you can relate to her on many levels in your own personal life. A lot of her thoughts and actions made me really take a look at my life. It really made me think about the things I am thankful for in my life. It also made me think about future possibilities in my life. Tap into the world of Mira and you will come out a better person ...more

Her cupcakeness has really outdone herself this time! Mira's story is the end of a wonderful journey! It's not easy to say goodbye to these ladies! I'm sure I'll be revisiting them often. Mira's story hits close to home. While I haven't experienced her losses I have had to face starting over at an age where you'd think life would be on cruise control. It's scary! But, like Mira, I've chosen to be happy. And, you really do have to make that conscious decision. Be sure to have a big box of tissues ...more

After her brother’s death, Mira feels totally and really alone, widowed without children after many miscarriages. And the Health and Happines society is moving on, with everybody facing new beginnings in their lives. Can Mira go on with her life as usual or is she going to face her past, present and future and find happiness in what she has letting go everything that was lost? A tough book about life, dreams, friendship, family and happiness.

I really loved this book. It is the final book in The Health and Happiness Society series. I am so sad that these books are done, but so glad I had the chance to read them all! They are so relatable and really make me dig deep into my own soul searching. Mira is a great book for anyone dealing with grief and loss. It is also great for those who are trying to empathize with someone that has experienced loss... SO basically everyone!

I am pretty amazed by the depth of compassion that exists in Katie Cross' books. I have been able to relate to many of her characters, but Mira in What Was Lost was a whole other story. Being invisible or being taken advantage of by your friends is not easy to deal with. But the love Mira had for her friends and for herself gave her a journey of re-discovery that she needed and deserved. I loved the story.

I couldn’t stop reading. I have loved Mira since she was introduced in Bon Bons to Yoga pants. Her story is heart wrenching. Through her grief she can’t see what she really has. I love that through her adversity she was able to grow. Katie Cross is magic. I feel like I knew the Health and Happiness ladies. I rooted, worried and cried for them. I didn’t want to start this last book because it was the end and I wasn’t quite ready. Thanks Katie for writing this series!

I have loved this entire series, but I really love Mira's story! While I can't fully relate with what she has gone through I can really relate to the emotional journey that she goes on. My heart broke reading all of the things Mira has gone through. Katie has done such a great job with this series that I am sad to see it end! I want to keep following along with these lovely ladies lives!

My world revolves around my husband (who is a major hottie), my precious kids, my Vizsla’s who act like children, and the mountains.

I wear hiking boots instead of heels when I need to feel powerful, and on a bad day, I love a weightlifting workout. Actually, I love it on a good day.

I don’t eat bread because my thyroid doesn’t like it, although there are days I miss it. Espe
