Power to the Brain

I don’t need a book to tell me about the law of attraction, cos I have enough evidence in my own life to state its existence. For instance, whenever I’m feeling tense, I tend to attract stressy situations; on the other hand, if I happen to be in a smiling, relaxing mood, happy events are coming my way
That’s enough for me to confirm the power of the brain as a life shaper!

So why the heck did I pick this book ?

This book is great. But it's really for those who haven't read The Secret or alike. It's a great intro into the mind business for those who haven't yet been introduced to the power of our minds, and the fact that most religions speak ultimately about the same things which just lead back to the man himself/herself etc.

So I think this makes for a great gift for someone you wish started reading about how to change your life with your own thinking.

But if you're familiar with this science then I must

First off, this is an exceptionally well written, enjoyable read. The mix of biography, anecdotes, science, and experience is probably as perfect as it can be.

I have always been a stern believer in the power of the mind and its ability to ‘attract’ the results we envisage. Whether positive or negative for that manner. To read the science behind this and how we can change/affect engrained neural passageways is exceptionally interesting.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest, independent review.

I loved the fact this self-help book was backed up with scientific facts and studies throughout, showing that if you do follow the exercises and do what the author says, you can change the way you think.

However, I did think I would get to the exercises sooner. I was over 65% of the way through the book before the first exercise (Step One) started, and by that time the scientific explanations (long in places) meant

This is a good and plausible self-help book. Dr Tara Swart is a neuroscientist, medical doctor and a leadership coach. She uses a lot of real life examples and also scientific evidence about the science of the brain to back up her ideas.

I found her use of the phrase ‘The Source’ a little wearing after a while as it felt like she was trying to sell us a new age technique when actually she wasn’t. The book could be more succinct. There is a lot of ‘I will show..’ and ‘You will see..’ sentences

This book left me very conflicted. Dr. Tara Swart, by all accounts, seems like an incredibly intelligent and accomplished person. She takes time to discuss in the early sections of this book about how people misuse neuroscientific language in "self-help" guides to seem intelligent. And as a budding neuroscientist and science communicator, I understand the importance of making scientific insights approachable to a general audience. But I feel this

I admit that when I read a book blurb that says you are four steps away......... - then I expect to open the book and hit the ground running. Unfortunately that was not what happened in this book. I was good and read the intro blurb which I would usually skip, thinking I would be rewarded with "the goods" straightaway afterwards.

What happened instead was I read a lot of background and a lot more and then some. It was ok, in fact a lot of it I was already aware of through other books I have

I guess that books can come along at the right time and the wrong time. This book came along at exactly the right time for me. Dr Swart's neuroscience background is open and accessible, her prose warm, encouraging and without judgement. Much of what she writes about (get more sleep, stay hydrated, do things in moderation etc) will be familiar but it's the connections she makes between brain and body- both at a physical and spiritual level- that sets this apart. I adored this book. As someone who's always been into the idea of 'The Law of Attraction', but who also struggles to see past the 'logical blocks' that stop me from embracing it wholly, this book is a perfect fit for me, as it combines both the whimsical ideas put forward by the law, but also backs it up with more solid, neuroscientific explanations. I love a good book that can empower me and change my perception on how I view the world and myself. This book fulfils this and more. I really liked the scientific back up to the claims and the book was easy to read through with examples of exercises but without asking you to do them now. You can do them at the end of the book where it guides you through them all. Very insightful and I have started the exercises and already changed my perception on a few things. The Source is an interesting self help book, as its written from the perspective of a neuroscientist and her craft, while still maintaining a humane touch. The book goes on to deliver that the easiest way to change our own lives would be to retrain our thoughts (and brain synapses) to be focused on who we want to be and what do we ultimately want out of life. Readers are encouraged to keep a journal chronicling their thoughts, as there is plenty of homework to digest and respond to. But if one ...more
Dr Tara Swart's THE SOURCE focuses on the power of positive thinking and how the elements of mindfulness and visualization can be used to help improve our lives. There is a lot of good stuff in this book and most of it is backed up by cited research. Dr Swart uses "the source" as a kind of shorthand for the steps and the changes required to change how you perceive things and how you set your goals and ambitions. I have highlighted loads of this book which is a good sign and I will be using some of the steps described and I have increased my journalling from very occasionally to now and then but I do want to get to do it regularly. This book often acts as my personal self-growth 'bible'. I read it strait through the first time, pausing for the suggested exercises, and now I revisit passages regularly. I will say that a lot of the suggestions, perspectives and exercises are things I was already familiar with, and which I believe many people may know of or practice, however there is a freshness in the way Swart describes these practices and habits. Let me start by saying i do not do self help books, i have never picked one up before. But what drew me to this book is the blurb,it had me intrigued to what the book could do and explain about our ways. The book was at times a bit preachy but overall i found it very informative and interesting to read about the human brain and how it can be used. An interesting, thought-provoking book on the power of the mind. The idea behind it is that we can reshape our minds to control our own destiny. There is an in-depth analysis of how our brains work. Exercises help to guide you through the process of understanding ourselves and then developing a strategy of growth. Having done a lot of manifestation work, I was intrigued to learn more about the science behind it. "The Source" doesn't disappoint.

Filled with practical exercises supported by anecdotes and scientific research, if you follow the advice in this book, you too can untap the limitless potential of your mind.

Really liked this no-nonsense approach in an easy to read self help guidebook, which as I use the tools and ideas provided, will probably become even better.

Well written and this will, I believe be hugely useful for me - even if not, I have been stimulated to believe the concept (which is itself worth reading the book for).

Anyone looking to make the most of themselves should read this.

I like self-help books and the idea that you can alter/shape your thinking by understanding how your brain works.
This book was a disappointing read. Much of the information is available from other sources. But it is a good introduction to the whole science of opening your mind.

I really love it when people from a more scientific based background consider spiritual practices to be equally as important. This is a very interesting book and I think I’ll continue to gain from it each time I dip into it.

I found this book really hard to get through at times but otherwise it's a really good read. It sets out some great tips and tricks for using the Law of Attraction principles and for how these perfectly align with our brains.

Another variation on The Secret. A few too many references to manifesting etc for me - but there is a bit more science involved in this one and some exercises to help you make the most of any opportunities presented.

I enjoyed reading The Secret when it first came out, so when I read the premise for The Source, I knew it would be a must-read. Some of the tips in this book are slightly obvious, but when it gives you the scientific reason behind it, you are able to understand things a lot easier. Wouldnt it be great if you got everything you ever wanted, just by imagining it? As Madonna famously sang in Vogue - 'all you need is your own imagination, so use it, that's what its for!' 4 stars

This book is like a better version of the Secret. It doesn’t play the blame game but specifically focuses on the present and future. What are you doing today to impact your future.

There are real life examples throughout the book of people who Tara has coached with their lives before and after focusing on what they want in their life and how to visualise that future.

There is a big focus at the beginning about the physiology of our manifestations and how neuroscience works for us,

A nice self-help book that reiterates how to practice the law of attraction, while being backed by scientific results. It took a while to get to the exercises as there were a lot of explanatory chapters and this may be easier to digest as an audiobook, however I did enjoy it and found it worthwhile.
