An extraordinary journey by an exceptional woman

I started reading this book with some trepidation as I’m not crazy about autobiographies. However, within the first few sentences, I “clicked” with Allison Kugel and became a sponge; absorbing all her words. I started reading this book with some trepidation as I’m not crazy about autobiographies. However, within the first few sentences, I “clicked” with Allison Kugel and became a sponge; absorbing all her words. Not hard when, in her introduction, she answers the question put to her over the years; “How did you get all these famous people to talk to you?” and her reply; “Trust!” If she was told something “off the record” she would never divulge what had been said, regardless of whether it could get her even more kudos.

This book doesn’t just give us insights into some of the famous people she interviewed, but in fact, it’s more about turning her life around and coming to terms with her extreme levels of anxiety, causing her to end up in an emergency room on a drip. At that time, in 2012, she was experiencing “five or six full-blown panic attacks per day, generalised fear, agoraphobia and unbearable physical sensations and symptoms. I feared I was dying, or worse, losing my mind completely and “going crazy,” a common fear among those with anxiety and panic disorder.”

I’ve gone straight in here, talking about her anxiety attacks, but this book is so much more than that. Allison Kugel has an interesting history, initially as a centre-page model in Playboy magazine. Fortunately for us, that stint didn’t last long before she became a journalist and started two public relations firms. It is through these PR companies that she got to meet and interview some of the top people in the USA. Including; Meghan McCain, Mike Tyson, Joe Pantoliano, 50 Cent among hundreds of others. I enjoyed reading the full interviews. They gave me a better idea of her style which helps her subjects to relax and answer questions which others have not thought to ask them.

I did find my interest lag when reading some of the people’s interviews as they have never entered my hemisphere, for example; 50 Cent and Joe Pantoliano, however, I happily ploughed through them to get to the interviews with Dr Deepak Chopra, Dr Andrew Weil and Dr Sanjay Gupta. These are among some of the most famous “gurus” who talk the talk and walk the walk of spirituality. Like many of us, sometimes events that seem overwhelming, get us on a spiritual journey.

It takes a brave person to admit in writing to the world, that they suffer from all the symptoms associated with anxiety. It is hard enough trying to explain them to family and friends, but Allison has laid her soul bare, in the hope that if she helps just one reader, to seek help for this or any other mental disease, then her honesty has been worth it.

A truly excellent book! Thank you, Allison Kugel.
