No Rest for the Wicked

Rate this book
When the Angels attack, there’s NO REST FOR THE WICKED.

Father Montgomery, an elderly priest with a secret past, begins to investigate after his parishioners come under attack, and with the help of Jones, a young businessman with an estranged child, Montgomery begins to track down the origin of the Angels.

The Angels are naked and androgynous. They speak in a dreadful harmony with no clear leader. These aren’t biblical cherubs tasked with the protection of the righteous – these are deadly creatures of light that have the power to completely eradicate.

When Jones himself is attacked, Father Montgomery knows he has to act fast. He speaks to the Angels and organises a final showdown where he’s asked to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Dane Cobain (High Wycombe, UK) is a published author, freelance writer and (occasional) poet and musician with a passion for language and learning. When he’s not working on his next release, he can be found reading and reviewing books while trying not to be distracted by Wikipedia.

His releases include No Rest for the Wicked (supernatural thriller), Eyes Like Lighthouses When the Boats Come Home (poetry) Former.ly (literary fiction), Social Paranoia (non-fiction), Come On Up to the House (horror), Subject Verb Object (anthology), Driven (crime/detective), The Tower Hill Terror (crime/detective), Meat (horror), Scarlet Sins (short stories), The Lexicologist’s Handbook (non-fiction) and The Leipfold Files (crime/detective).

His short stories have also been anthologised in Local Haunts (ed. R. Saint Clare), We’re Not Home (ed. Cam Wolfe), Served Cold (ed. R. Saint Clare and Steve Donoghue) and Eccentric Circles (ed. Cynthia Brackett-Vincent).

Cobain’s love of words grew from an early age, whether he was rewriting the lyrics to pop songs or teaching his elder siblings – maths and computer science students at university – how to execute commands in MS-DOS, all before he hit double digits. He started writing at fourteen, and progressed from lyrics and music to journals, short stories and poetry before writing the first draft of an early novel whilst in lectures. He studied creative writing at London’s Roehampton University, earning a 2:1 bachelor’s degree before starting a career as a social media marketer.

It was this career in marketing, combined with his love for reading and writing, which led to the creation of SocialBookshelves.com, his book blog, which was featured on multiple “best book blog” lists and has since been merged with DaneCobain.com. Through SocialBookshelves.com, he met Jesse James Freeman, the former VP of Community Management at Booktrope Publishing. Cobain’s debut novella, a supernatural thriller called No Rest for the Wicked, was released by Booktrope’s Forsaken imprint on June 11th 2015.

His second release, a collection of poetry called Eyes Like Lighthouses When the Boats Come Home, was released by Booktrope Editions in March 2016. Cobain performed his poetry at stand up nights, slams and open mic nights, memorised all 101 poems in the book.

Cobain’s third book, a literary fiction novel called Former.ly, was released on June 11th 2016. It follows the story of the rise and fall of a social networking site for the dead. Users sign up to the site, create a profile that they populate with updates that only they can see, and then when they die, their profile goes live to the public. But there’s something sinister about the site – something that people are willing to kill for.

Former.ly was followed by a non-fiction book called Social Paranoia: How Consumers and Brands Can Stay Safe in a Connected World, which was released in August 2016. The year was rounded off with Come On Up to the House, a horror novella and screenplay, in November.

In 2017, Cobain quit his marketing job to focus on full-time self-employment as an author and freelance writer. He also released Subject Verb Object: An Anthology of New Writing, which features 18 pieces from different authors and which was collected by Cobain and edited by Dane Cobain and Pam Elise Harris. That was followed in 2018 by Driven, a crime/detective novel.

In the following months, Driven was picked up for re-release by Encircle Publications, with its sequel, The Tower Hill Terror, released in 2020. In the same year, he independently released Meat, a horror novel set on a factory farm.

2021 saw the release of short story collection Scarlet Sins and non-fiction book The Lexicologist’s Handbook. The third book in the Leipfold series, The Leipfold Files, was released in 2022.

Most intense read, ever!!

Angels... Angels... How can a word that sounds so nice, so peaceful, so serene, lose its meaning? How is it possible that the supposed to be good creatures are actually not? Instead they are punishing, maybe a bit cruel.

Dane Cobain did a majestic job by making a make-believe story like this. This book was put up as a horror story, but it's just kind of eerie and suspenseful. His writing style will pull you up and take you with it, I've almost forgotten that I'm reading a book that has fictional characters, fictional settings, everything fictional. It felt real. His book is really different from anything else. So original yet it felt so familiar.

No Rest For The Wicked is an unexpected book. the twists, complexities, turns, everything will surprise you. I even started questioning my beliefs. Because of being frightened I almost dnf-ed this book, but dang this is just too good.

This book is not actually for anyone, but if you do love suspense, and a bit of a horror, give No Rest For The Wicked a try!

“Angel,” what comes to mind when you read that word? Chubby Cherubs? Perfectly sculpted beings with wings? Protectors, guardians, proof that there is a better place after death? Meet Dane Cobain’s angels and you will be in for the fright of your life, if you are fortunate enough to walk away. No Rest for the Wicked is going to take you into a world where angels have become wicked, evil, and they stand as judge and jury while dishing out their won form of justice in the most grisly ways imaginable. They have the power to wipe out humanity and all of its flaws and they are determined to do just that.

Where did they come from? How have they formed their own execution squad? Where are divine hope and grace, let alone intervention? Follow an elderly priest with secrets in his past, and a young businessman as they attempt to find how these deadly angels came to be. Are their origins found in religion or has science warped the angels we group up with? Who will be next to confess their sins and face the brutal punishment?

Dane Cobain will have you on the edge of your seat, sitting with all the lights on and thinking about anything you may have done that might not be seen in the best light come Judgment Day. Be advised, this is NOT a spiritual tale of the coming Armageddon, this is like a worst nightmare ever! Well written, dark, gruesome in the details, but definitely entertaining for those of us who like our horror and the hair-raising side. There is no religion bashing, no preaching, this is dark fiction on the edge, a very razor-sharp edge.

I received this copy from author Dane Cobain in exchange for my honest review. I have no personal or professional relationship with this author.

Angels. They are not what comes to your mind the very second you hear the word Angel. The guardian angel with a serene look or the cherubs with a halo – that is what you think, right? But Dane Cobain, the author, has other ideas.

In ‘No Rest for the Wicked’ Angels are not the patient and forgiving creatures we imagine. Instead they are hell bent on punishing every single sinner – no matter how big or small their sins are. The story is told through the two protagonists Father Montgomery and Robert Jones. These two men couldn’t be more different. The elderly Father is experienced in life and has secrets of his own. Jones is a young businessman and experienced in the ways of life too. The wide arc that their personalities create makes for interesting and contrasting voices. When Father Montgomery’s parishioners are attacked he decides to take matters into his own hands. He starts looking in Angels and their origins and finds a helping hand in Jones.

The plot was really different from what I was expecting. Dane Cobain has a very imaginative mind and that is clear from the setting of this world. Things are so different in this fictional world, yet at certain points they feel eerily familiar. There is a saying that the best lies are based on truth and I find that the best works of fictions have pieces of reality in them. And Dane Cobain’s take on Angels is really interesting – that is all I will say here so as to avoid any spoilers. And talking of spoilers, there is a terrific twist in the tale that is disclosed right towards the end of the story. The author has a very descriptive narrative style that is quite engaging. That along with the quick pace makes this book a quick and entertaining read.

My only qualm with the book is that it turned out to be very one dimensional. I love it when as a reader I can discover the many facets of a plot… this one didn’t have much. What you see is what you pretty much get. Also, the book has some explicit and frightening descriptions and as such this book may not be for everyone.

I found this book to be largely different from whatever I have read so far and as such it was a good reading experience.

No Rest for the Wicked is a small book. If you're not familiar with novellas, you might be tempted to believe nothing much can happen in that short a space, but you would be wrong. Unlike so many novels that sprawl on and on just to reach their 80-100 thousand word quotas, this book goes in, tells the story, and gets out. There were never any times where I felt like I needed something explained more (and part of the book deals with the Large Hadron Collider, which is damn confusing as a subject).

The plot jumps around in time a little, but after orienting myself after the first few (brief) chapters, it was super easy to follow. Cobain has a wonderful, fluid writing style that becomes invisible as you read (which is exactly what every writer wants). This is marketed as a horror book, but (at least for me), I didn't find it "scary", although I did enjoy the suspense. Then again, I've read many a Stephen King novel and thought, "oh wow! What a bad situation," when something awful is going down. Others... (like when Joey Tribbiani had to keep putting The Shining in the freezer to "stay safe")

Read No Rest for the Wicked. Request it from your local library or pick up your own copy from Amazon. It's big on story, but respects your time as a busy person.

***I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an HONEST review***

Super intense! There wasn't a dull moment through the whole thing; I was constantly trying to look around the corner in front of characters, just knowing something was going to pop out. These angels are not your run-of-the-mill angels. No sweetness here! I thought the author did a really good job with his story telling and in the weaving of his world. The characters were quite good, and I enjoyed this all around. Kind of hoping there's an audible for this, as I think I'd really like this to go forward with more theatrical elements. I think it would suit it well!

This book was AMAZING. I had to get used to the English words for things, because I am in the US. But once I got used to that it was great. This book makes you think about what Angels are and what they are meant to do. Dane, I am so glad to know you and I didn't have to worry at all about reading your book. Nightfeare aka Melissa

This story was so different from what I had expected. It had me hesitating, even cautious. I'm not particularly a person of traditional religions, but I thought it was kind of refreshing that the Angels wasn't very nice as I know most people would define them.

That they considered themselves judge, jury and executioner. What them seem to me is that they are sin eaters. It's so chilling. I don't know why exactly but they made the hair on my arms to stand straight up. It is dark, grisly and had me on edge the whole time. With each page I turned, my breath would catch in anticipation. Eerie in fact. It made me feel like the very air was crackling as these Angels came to a person demanding to know all their sins.

Mr. Cobain has dangerously thrilled me with the story of these angles reminding me that there is evil in the world; as well as good and he managed to bring a bright & burning light to it.

I would like to know more about the back story between Father Montgomery and Jones as it added to the spice of the story as well as the characters that was being judged. What was it that brought these person to light on the Angels radar? I did find it interesting that Father Montgomery choose to give the ultimate sacrifice.

I would like to see what else Me. Cobain plans to do with his dark side. That would be a book worthy of reading. I have to thank BBT for introducing me Mr Cobain and in light on my honest opinion that I'm giving for the exchange this ARC I give this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars. And I have to acknowledge that it sent shivers down my back again as I typed up this reviews.

This book was provided to me in return for an honest review, so without trying to spoil it, I will tell you exactly what I thought of this book.

First of all, it's a short and enjoyable book- there's no unnecessary pages and the story continues at an even pace. This is the kind of book that a busy person can read and enjoy themselves without spending too much time and especially as a medical student, I thought that was a plus point in itself. The concepts presented were also explained in simple terms and I did not find the need to re-read chapters and passages except to find my place after taking a break.

If I was to talk about the plot, I'd say it was a unique and interesting plot. I always enjoy science fiction and the added shade of religion made it much more captivating. The additional content presented in the form of articles gave the novel a bit of a journal feel coupled with the occasional flashback chapters. Everything that seemed unrelated ended up falling into place right before the finale, which in itself was not as climatic as I thought it would be but made a lot of sense in hindsight.

All in all, this book was a pleasant read. Despite seeming like a horror novel at the start, I felt that it discussed controversies and the science religion clash more than any actual sort of violence. It was a novel story and if you are the kind of person looking for a short but entertaining book to read that contains mystery, science with a twist of religion and what it is to be human, then this is the book for you.

This review has been crossposted from my blog at The Cosy Dragon . Please head there for more in-depth reviews by me, which appear on a timely schedule.

Naked and androgynous Angels have begun to exact vengeance on all those who have sinned. But who says they are from the Lord? As more and more people are killed, and more Angels appear, it is up to a priest and his illegitimate son to sort out the mystery and save mankind.

After loving former.ly by Cobain, I was hoping for another fantastic first person forey into a world where physics might have created Angels that are anything but! Sadly, this novel did not meet my expectations.

Despite the blurb promising me a secretive elderly priest that is the only one who can stop the invasion, I was faced with a range of other experiences of others facing the Angels. Despite Jones and Father Montgomery’s perspectives popping up more often than the others, I wasn’t satisfied with the flow of the novel or the character development.

The author also sent me a book of poems (Eyes like Lighthouses When the Boats Come Home) but I’m not sure I am going to touch those. Poetry doesn’t float my boat, but this author has so much to offer I might try one or two of them.

For me, this novel didn’t work because all the conflicting perspectives drove me up the wall. For someone else, this might be a nifty novel to get you thinking about science and faith, and how the two might interact. 3 stars from me.

No Rest for the Wicked tells a story of good versus evil, in a uniquely different way. The story is great; suspenseful action mixed with love, family, friendship, and mystery. I loved how the story came together in the end; allowing readers to experience unconditional love through the ultimate sacrifice.

The story has an unusual, and hard to follow layout; I had to jump back chapters to double-check the dates throughout my reading. I like how the chapters told everyone’s story from in different times throughout their lives; however, it would have been a much smoother read if it was written in a past to present order.

The story was one of my preferred genres; I love the supernatural aspect, and the idea is extremely original. Cobain is a very talented writer, and his talent for imagery is quite obvious throughout the chapters. Unfortunately, the order of the chapters took a lot away from that; starting with the present day worked, but the back in forth for the rest of chapters in the book was a major negative for me.

After drawing readers’ interest with the first chapter, written in present day; taking the rest in order would have made for a perfectly smooth and easy read. Despite the layout, Cobain’s brilliant writing and unique story deserves 4 Boundless Stars for No Rest for the Wicked. I look forward to seeing more from Cobain....Beth

At a mere 124 pages, No Rest for the Wicked packs a hefty punch! This supernatural novella follows Father Montgomery as he seeks to uncover the truth behind the strange occurrence of Angels who have arrived to pass judgement, leaving a trail of death in their wake like a pandemic of epic proportions.

This entire concept has a serious creep factor happening on multiple levels. People are dying. No one truly understands what the Angels are or how they came to be. Can they even be stopped? Are they really Angels? The only thing that seems to be certain is that once you see them, your number is up. They feed on your sins, leaving only your ashes behind. You receive a brilliant combination casting an evil light on something known to be “good” and pairing it the uncertain. It works incredibly well.

The characters are evolved just enough to add additional mystery, yet feel viable. The timeline and narration are fluid, keeping with the quick pace of this story and creating a “one sit” read that is engaging from the very beginning. With a perfect mixture of science fiction and supernatural elements, No Rest for the Wicked brings a lot to the table in so few pages. I would love to see this story expanded on, as I was disappointed not with the conclusion but that it was over.

I’ve become a fan of Dane Cobain from watching his YouTube channel Dane Reads. From those videos, I’ve heard him perform some of his own work, as well as give reading performances from the work of other authors. Having read several horror stories, some of his poetry, and his detective novels, I’ve come to appreciate the author’s talent across multiple genres. He also has an amazing cat named Biggie (for obvious reasons) that sometimes appears on YouTube with him.

When you read this book, you need to pay attention to the date listed at the top of each chapter because the story is not told in time-sequential order. There’s a chapter title, then a date, then the text of the chapter. It became more obvious to me as I figured out which characters were in each place in the timeline, but it really did help to pay close attention before starting each chapter. Dane Cobain delivered something different in this novella. It’s a weird horror story with angelic creatures killing off the population.

Coming in at about 120 pages and 41 chapters, this book clearly has short chapters. I like fast-paced stories, but I know not everyone is a fan of them, especially with the point of view changing so quickly over and over again.

I recommend this novella for fans of fast-paced weird horror stories with multiple POVs, but I have to mention that of all the Dane Cobain books I’ve read, this one was my least favorite.

Horror has become the flavour of this month for me I guess. So, my third book chosen also evokes a deep sense of fear in me.

The bottom line of the story is that angels are not all sweet and sugary nice. They can be mean too. If I say that the plot deals with how angels ensure there is no rest for the wicked-natured, I won't be wrong.

Dane is a master storyteller. His words conjure up imageries that can scare and make you squirm. Language is basically meant for young adults and above. Hence this book is a no-no for children.

His weakest area has been characterisation. This is my personal view. It maybe because a single character did not stand out in the entire gamut. Though the antagonists were spelt out and main characters identified, a little bit more of their descriptions would have worked wonders. I had to reduce a star.

To sum up, I was compelled to finish the story in one sitting and that speaks volumes about the writing. Dane is an author to watch out for if you love horror stories. I only wish Dane had added more details about the characters and elaborated a few sub-plots. It would have gone a long way in engaging the reader more. The book is definitely worth reading if you love horror stories.

P.S- Thank you Dane and Booktrope Publishing for this wonderful story. I did have a tough time putting myself to sleep after reading this.

** Copy of book was provided by author in exchange for an honest review **

Iiintersting synopsis. Not something I'd pick up and read in a normal circumstance because it isn't my usual genre but it still sounds intriguing.

Sounds very supernaturally though, (as in the TV series) which get's my attention a lot - obviously for the story and not Sam and Dean - so I think I'm going to enjoy it.

Not something I'd normally read but it has kept me intrigued from the start which a lot of romance novels have struggled to do recently.

The chapters flit from different people and a different parts in the MC's lives.

Essentially the plot revolves around two main characters. Farther Montgomery and Robert Jones, but we visit different people in order to see how the Angels are destroying humanity. The Angels come to earth hunting out everyone that has sinned, making them beg for their lives before burning them into ash.

When the Angels visit both Jones and Montgomery, they decided to do something to stop them, but how do you stop something that essentially isn't real?

But there is a twist in this book that made me, 'oh oh oh,' while I was reading it and I realized how the two characters were linked! it's just a shame that it's only at the end Jones finds out!

It's a great book that shouldn't be overlooked and definitely worth a read, even if it's not your normal genre.

The year is 2009 and people all over the world are dying. No one is sure why, but the numbers of the dead grows everyday. Many have theories about what's happening but there is no proof. Father Montgomery begins his own investigation when his parishioners become part of this nightmare. What he finds will shock you. Be ready.

Once you begin to read this book, you think you know what's happening. The thing is, it's something totally different. I know that sounds confusing, but it's not really. Wild and fascinating, this is one book you won't want to put down. The writing is superb and the characters could be your own neighbors. The author reaches right down into your soul with this book. He will make you question many things around you. I know this book will be talked about for a long time to come. It's that intense. Get one today!

I didn't find any issues with this one.

I gave this one 5 cheers out of 5 because it will shake you to the core. ~Copy of book provided by author in exchange for a fair review~

I don’t think I’ve read any book about angels, ever. That doesn’t mean that I’m not interested in books about angels though. I do. So when the author offered me to review this book, I was excited to read it.
No Rest for the Wicked is about Father Montgomery, a priest, who investigates a series of attacks by creatures that called themselves The Angels. He has help from Jones, a businessman who’s a close friend of his. They are trying to figure out who The Angels are and how to stop them from annihilating human races. It might sound exaggerated but from what I read, these creatures are like on a mission. It almost feels like an apocalypse. Their numbers are growing and more people go missing because of them. That’s just how scary the story is.

I sent out a "tweet" to ask for a book recommendation as I have been in a reading slump lately always reading the same thing over and over. I got a response from Dane Cobain to check out his book.

I am very excited that I was able to get his book for my Kindle at a great price. But mostly I was excited about the book.

Angles are thought to be these all loving beautiful creatures but what if we are wrong? What harm could they do to humanity? What would humanity do to help themselves, can they help themselves? Well if you want to know I recommend you pick up this book (in whatever format you like to read in). Not only is the story line well done but it's well written as well. I did not want to put it down and finished it in two days (that's a big deal for me).

I enjoyed the way this book was written so much I just got his other book and will start that soon too. Thank you Twitter for allowing me to find a new author to enjoy!

For sure a interesting read for me when "Angels" were quite judgmental and by judgmental I mean killing you since they love to hear your sins and feed off of them and they still pretty much your number is up if they find you. Quite a concept, really.

While I feel this could've been a tad longer it was still a satisfying stand alone. Would've liked a bit more into it. I did appreciate that you didn't need a degree in science to understand how they came to be. A nice simple scientific explanation than the actual mechanics of it all was nice where I didn't have to re-read and feel like an idiot lol.

This book considering the genre is quite tactful of religion so no one would be offended. At least I wouldn't think so. But it does play a major role in this novel.

Overall I recommend this book to suspense/horror crowd. I was able to read this in one sitting nicely. Great job!

Wow, I was not expecting this when I picked this book up, at all. I read the cover "These angels aren't so sweet" but damn I did not expect that. I have to say that I have now become a fan of Dane Cobain because this book was great.

It only took me a few hours to read this thrilling book because I could not put it down. I had to know what Father Montgomery was going to do next and what was gong to happen next. It was a short read which with this book I didn't like because I wanted more. There were times when I wanted a scene to go deeper into what was happening. I really liked Father Montgomery's character a lot. I felt like he was needed in this apocalyptic world and I hope he'll be in ours.

I highly recommend this book to anyone that likes a dark, thrilling, end of the world type book. That has angels as the bad guys instead of being the good guy.

It's an interesting read but I'd have liked the characters to have greater depth. It seemed almost allegorical, with a life lesson for us all about seeing the world through another man's eyes before judging him. I like the mixture of paranormal horror and pseudo-scientific reasoning, as well as the way the book throws up unexpected twists and turns along the way, before a majestic and satisfying ending. If you like to read wild cards, that don't really fit into any specific, defined genre, you won't be disappointed.

This isn’t a long book. It didn’t need to be. It is a cleverly written, compact story of how love and faith can overcome hate and intolerance.

The plot line plays on the conflicts between science and religion and sprinkles just enough fact into the mix to add a sense of underlying realism.

The timeline darts back and forth between different time periods and characters, with an incremental reveal of relevant information, which I felt helped to build the suspense.

Overall, a tasty, spooky morsel for Halloween.

An intense story with a lot of feedback in several years.
The story is centered on a priest and angels awakened by experiments at CERN.
qeuste entities are not good, polite but survive on the sins committed by the people who are found guilty assasinate.
Only the understanding of this priest for humanity and these entities will allow humanity to save itself.
In conclusion it is a beautiful book with a plot that involves you although a little raw in the scenes involving these angels.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I was floored by this book. It started a little slow and random and made me not want to put it down. I just had to keep turning the page (okay e-book) to see what happened next. Angels killing people because of their sin??!! Unheard of right?!?! Wrong!! These aren't the Angels of the bible or are they? A great read that will stretch what you think you know about Angels.

After the first few pages, I knew this was a book I wasn’t going to be able to put down, until I got to The End. If you like dark, absolutely unpredictable, twisted, raise-the-hair-on-the-back-of-your-neck type of horror/suspense as much as I do, you can't go wrong with this book! A very well-written book with wonderfully-interesting characters. The suspense builds at just the right pace as the story unfolds. Worthy of your TBR list.

I honestly don't know what shelf to put this on. It has a fair bit of everything. It will be easy to spoil, so I'll try not to do that. But it's a really good story about consequences and how they will haunt you the whole of your life. Also, it's just a really well written book that draws you in, and makes you feel all the things.

This was a pretty quick read for me because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. The writing was also lovely. The author knows how to use imagery to really suck you in to a scene. I felt like the plot could have gone deeper, like the author was hurrying to get the story wrapped up. I really enjoyed the creepy aspects rolled into religious dogma and imagery however.

I received this book from eBook Discovery in exchange for an honest review. This is a short book that packs a punch. A mix of thriller, sci-fi, horror and religion with incredible writing and strong characters. It is part of a series, but you can read it on its own. Very interesting read.

Bought a signed copy from the author!

It was a well-rounded story and a good early entry from an author with a good understanding of writing.
