It is possible to finish your thesis in 6 months, even if you don’t know what to write or haven’t finished your research. In this book you will learn the A simple daily habit that will help you start writing your dissertation How to make it impossible not to write everyday How to write even if all your research isn’t finished How to get the most out of your advisor meetings How to get your friends actively help you finish, even if they aren’t academics.
I was originally looking for some tips to help me sit down everyday and work on my MA that has been rather neglected since the approval of my proposal, then I came across this E-book. It provides some useful guidance that is both simple and to the point. I'll try to incorporate them in my daily routine to get this thesis done and over with as soon as possible
I'd say 4,5 stars given this is so well-known. This guy is definitely smarter than what he's showing. He goes straight to the point and he's clear on biases. Also... I loved his examples (Kudos to Seinfeld, Asimov, Hegel, Hemingway). This is an obvious pamphlet, but he tells you "it" as it is.
Very straightforward and simple advices. I will start those tips from tomorrow Jan 19, 2019. I'm wondering if the author mean 6 month of constant writing 24 hours/day equivalent. Given his field in history I guess he is saying 500 words a day and by the time you do it for 6 months straight you'll finish. This might not be the case for natural sciences because we have to spend a lot of time conducting experiment. There is not much to write for literature review but the word making here depends on our experiment outcome.
There are some interesting tips such as getting the words down on paper and editing later is better than trying to get a perfect first draft out; and also the often recommended writing in the morning tip.
It did lack some depth, especially when discussing some of the issues that surround writing a first draft, however that's unsurprising given the length.
Simple but practical as I look to begin my dissertation. Will certainly try employing these methods and will come back to let you know if it worked. I also thought the spreadsheet was a great addition and very helpful. Thank you
- A very short and comprehensive book on how to start writing thesis or research paper. - Effectiveness of technique can only be utilized only after you start doing it.
Absolutely phenomenal. This book is a game-changer for anyone struggling to finish their thesis. In just a short, no-nonsense read, Scott Rank lays out a clear, practical roadmap to go from stuck and overwhelmed to productive and confident. His tips are insanely effective—simple habits, mindset shifts, and strategies that make writing every day not just possible, but inevitable.
What’s most impressive is how actionable everything is. You don’t need perfect research, unlimited time, or superhuman discipline. Just follow the steps, and you’ll see progress—fast. This book isn’t just motivational; it’s transformational. If you're even thinking about writing a thesis, read this first.
It was worth the $4.99 but wouldn't have been worth $5. While practical advice you have probably heard most of it before. Still I'm willing to give his technique a try.
This book was very short and to the point. I appreciate the concise manner in which it was written. A beginning doctoral student would benefit from reading this book.
