Good introduction book. Wasn't what I wanted but would be good if you're transitioning to JavaFX from another UI. What this lacked for me was the in depths of the core behind JavaFX and advanced features like building custom table editor cells.

So, the problem with The Dummies format for graphics APIs is that they tend to be kind of inefficient: You get a lot of material you could get from a reference, with some good simple examples (that tend to go a bit beyond a reference) but not enough to go super in-depth.

It's a mixed bag. And I say this as someone who wrote a book that's almost exactly like this one: OS/2 Warp Programming for Dummies.

This was also sorta a detriment, but not one I could knock the book for. The other problem with this type of book is that they're all very similar because there's only a few logical ways to organize this kind of topic. At points, I felt like saying "get on with it, already!", which is not really like me.

Anyway, the book starts strong and then starts to feel a little perfunctory in places that could've used more elaboration. The last part of the book contains very light intros to more peripheral parts of JavaFX, and sometimes this feels a little weak (media player) but other times I was surprised at how good the grounding was for such a short space (3D models).

There's more editorial gaffes here than I'd hope for. Missing words and (mostly) wrong words but I don't think there was too much that'd throw the reader off. The book does not cover FXML, the textual representation of GUIs.

Overall, though, a worthy effort.
