not an orphaned, disaffected Narumi finding his family in the Kaiju defense force and growing into the top protector so no else has to lose the things he did T_T
Ça me l'a rendu plus sympathique.
Series: Kaiju No. 8: B-Side Ch. 7-12 Rating: 4 stars - It was really good
This volume picks up where the previous book with Kikoru testing out some Numbers weapons. Then goes into the backstory of Captain Gen Narumi and how he ended up in the Defense Force.
I loved seeing Kikorou testing out weapons and finding the one that works for her. This is where she finally gets her giant axe that was a failed prototype, but works perfectly for her. I love seeing this badass woman have a giant weapon that she uses to destroy kaiju with. I can’t wait to see how Kafka will react when he sees her fighting with it.
The story then goes into Captain Gen Narumi and his life. We learn that he was an orphan who as a teenager was recruited by Captain Isao Shinomiya because he was able to kill a kaiju as a teenager. I really love that we are finally getting this guy's backstory. He is a powerful defense force captain, but also lazy that it makes you wonder why he is that way. Now we know and it makes me like Narumi more now.
This volume ends with Kikorou finishing up her training and both of them preparing for the upcoming fight against Kaiju No. 9. I enjoyed these side stories a lot because they give us a lot of backstory on the characters and how they get their weapons and such. I hope we continue to get more of these volumes.

[I received an ARC from VIZ Media via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.] Kaiju No. 8: B-Side continues to be a good companion to the main Kaiju No. 8 manga, or for those who are only familiar with the anime. Volume 2 lines up with what's being featured in the second season of the anime so far. It was nice to see Shinomiya show off her skills in training, with additional commentary from Hoshina and Ashiro that shows how the Defense Force elite are all a bit unhinged. The Third Division's level of unhinged pales in comparison to First Division's Narumi. This volume shows his origin story in the Defense Force and it makes his shenanigans more tolerable. Overall this volume has violence that lines up with the anime but in black and white panels, so that brings down the gore factor compared to the anime where the kaiju innards are in color. I look forward to the next volume.
Narumi’s relationship with Hasegawa is equally hilarious and wholesome. I love how Hasegawa admires Narumi for the man he grew up to be. What stood out to me the most was how Isao stood up for Narumi so many times despite HQ’s desire to discharge him. That said, my only gripe with side b pt. 2 was how uninspired Narumi’s backstory was written out to be.
