As a homeschool mom I try to find ways to teach safety to my children without it being boring or mundane so when I was offered a chance to read and review a book from the When I Grow Up I Want to Be series I knew I had to grab the Firefighter book. I have a 7 year old son as well so firefighters are still appealing at this age so it was a double hit at our house, I get some good safety tips in and he as well as my daughters got an entertaining read out of it. The beginning of the book begins with an excerpt from the Ode to Our Firemen by Frederic G. Fenn in 1878 and then we meet Will who is sitting in his class room when his teacher announces a class field trip to be taken next week. Will is afraid of fire, because as he explains his parents are always telling him about not playing with matches, stay away from the grill and of course he’s afraid of the way a firefighter looks in their big scary suits. The book takes the reader through a field trip to a fire station and it seems as if you’re really there as some illustrations are real with animated figures over top, which is quite neat and interesting to see and provides an interesting visual as the book is read.
Through our are also diagrams such as a firefighter in all their gear which explains which each piece is so it’s less scary should children ever have to encounter a firefighter entering their house. The book also tells children that while they may have a fear of something that other children also have fears of their own and that each is valid and some children may have the same fears but don’t talk about it and are only discovered from body language. Children will also learn of the different type of trucks and rescue equipment such as helicopters, planes, watercraft as well as the usual vehicles such as ambulances and trucks. Will also learns that firefighters are not to be feared and you should never run away from them if they are coming to you in a burning house or building – that could lead to catastrophic outcomes.
At the end of the book, which is the most important part in my opinion, is the home fire safety checklist which walks children through how to make sure their homes are safe from the unintentional fire such as making sure there is a smoke detector on every level (makes me want to install one in our basement where our washer and dryer are), checking cords for any frayed ones, and more. There is also an instruction page on how to make your home’s fire escape plan – great for the child who wants to feel a part of protecting their family and also ensuring that everyone knows what to do in the event of a fire. This was a great way to once again go through the safety measures of fire as well as to reassure my children that while firefighters may look scary in all that garb they should never run from them.
**I was given a copy of this book from Wigu Publishing in exchange for my honest opinion, no other compensation was given.

My Review:
If your child would love to know what it would be like to have a story all about him or her, I know of a way to make that dream or thought a reality. When I Grow Up Books also known as WIGU Publishing is a way to have this become a reality, just follow this link to learn more. They have very educational and authoritative books that take a child's favorite activity, adventure or dream and put it into a book to share with the world. What child wouldn't jump at the chance to do something this spectacular?!
In their latest publication we are invited along on a field trip that includes a little boy by the name of Will, to a firehouse. Will has always been terrified of fire and anything related to it, even firefighter. Who wouldn't be scared of these individuals in these big, heavy coats and darkened masks? Will and his classmates learned so much information on that trip. So much so that Will was no longer afraid, he learned that all firefighters are afraid of fire too. But they still have to overcome that fear to do their job and to rescue others. By the end of the story this one field trip changed everything for Will.
**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the publisher.
When I Grow Up I Want To Be… is a series of children’s books that covers different professions. In When I Grow Up I Want To Be… a Firefighter! Will’s class is going on a trip to a local fire station but Will is afraid of fires… and of big scary firefighters! They wear big clothes and boots, wear masks and run out of the smoke swinging axes!
Will starts thinking of ways to get out of going and before he knows it the day of the visit arrives and he has a surprisingly amazing day.
While written for the American market this book features American firefighters and equipment but is not that much different from firefighters in the UK so shouldn’t be much of an issue for children reading this book as firefighters are universal heroes.
Along with the story about Will’s fears and how educating people to dispel myths and misconceptions this wonderful story is also filled with lots of facts about the different equipment firefighters use including their clothing, safety equipment and different types of vehicles used for different terrains and types of fires.
If also teaches that it’s good to be afraid of fire and to respect it but with proper extensive training you can control and put out fires.
If also shows that the fire brigade do more than just put out fires.
At the end of the book there is also a home safety checklist, a guide to fire prevention in the home, and a home fire escape plan. This is a great idea to teach children the importance of fire prevention and what to do in the event of a fire.
A perfect story that will engage children’s imaginations while educating them about the role of a firefighter, such as how they all live together in the fire house, what happens when the alarm sounds and the various equipment carried within their vehicles as first responders and not just firefighting equipment but also basic first aid.
Again this is another fun, educational and beautifully read from the When I Grow Up series by Wigu Publishing.
As adults we sometimes forget youngsters can be afraid of day-to-day elements we take for granted. They see things differently than we do, so their reactions can be different.
Wigu Publishing addresses this issue in their recent WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE…series release, A FIREFIGHTER! This delightful series introduces juvenile readers (aimed at ages 6 and up) to residents in their community and describes their various vocations.
The latest release – WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE…A FIREFIGHTER – focuses on a young boy named Will and a field trip to the local firehouse. Will enjoys field trips, but doesn’t want to go on this one. He’s afraid of fire and firefighters. He knows the firefighters do good work, but they are huge and scary in heavy coats and masks.
Will has no choice but to go on the field trip. Once at the firehouse he begins to learn about the firefighters and the equipment they use. He also discovers the firefighters aren’t as scary as he thought when he meets them up close and understands about their clothing.
This charming book explains about firefighters jobs, how they use their equipment and why. In addition, it shows the various types of fire trucks used, along with air and water equipment.
The book also teaches fire safety and encourages youngsters to talk with the adults in their home about ways to stay safe. A Home Fire Safety Checklist is included, along with instructions on making your own home fire escape plan.
The story is brought to life with beautiful colored drawings combined with actual photographs.
This fascinating book will not only educate, but entertain and inspire youngsters.
FTC Full Disclosure - This book was sent to me by the publisher in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review.
I can't say enough good things about this educational and fun series of books. All kids dream of being something when they grow up and this series of books hits on all those great occupations by sharing a story and fitting in educational aspects of that job. The kids are learning while reading and don't even know it!
In this story, we are introduced to Will who is worried about going on his class field trip to the fire station. Will has always been afraid of fires and of firefighters. He thinks about ways he can miss going on the field trip, but as the day arrives he decides to go. When the Fire Captain announces that he is also afraid of fires, Will is suddenly excited to learn more about fire fighting. The children are given a tour of the station, allowed to pet the firehouse dogs, introduced to a female firefighter in complete fire fighting gear, allowed to climb in a fire truck, and able to handle a hose spraying water.
Through the field trip the reader is informed about fire safety, the different jobs of a fire fighter that include more than just fighting fires, and how to make a safety plan in your own home. We are also taught there are many different types of fire fighters and equipment including helicopters and airplanes.
Building on Will's real fear and the excitement of his other classmates, this book will appeal to children who are curious and afraid to admit their fears. By the end of the story, your child will want to visit their own neighborhood fire station!

Will is afraid of Fire Fighters and fire so when his teacher says their next field trip is to a fire station he is devastated. When he gets there however he learns a few things about himself and Firefighters. First of all, it is okay to be afraid of fire it is a dangerous force that can hurt you. Firefighters on the other hand are just people who wear protective clothing and just look scary on the outside but are there to help you. This book is really about courage and understanding it is a great way to learn about Fire Fighters and how they are here to help you when there is an emergency. Plus the illustrations overlaid on top of real pictures really added to the enjoyment of the story.
I enjoyed reading this book to my 5 year old grandson. The book held his interest and he got a lot out of it. This is a story that could be easily read to a group of children. The pictures are terrific. Read the rest of my review here http://ureadmorebooks.blogspot.com
