This book was ten years in the making but I finally finished it! It's a collection of the top 50 most popular articles from my website "Science Questions with Surprising Answers," with each article extensively expanded and edited. This book also contains completely new content that is not available on my website: a completely new question and its answer, the question popularity rankings data, a section on the historical background of my website and this book, a large glossary of terms, and a humorous and useful pop quiz at the end. This book is dense with advanced scientific information and is not a children's book. The intended purpose of this book is to present interesting, enlightening, little-known scientific information to a general audience. For this reason, this book contains no mathematical equations or technical diagrams. It does contain detailed explanations and examples. I was surprised with how well the book turned out, so I heartily recommend it to you.
Fantastic book ! It perfectly justifies it's title, "surprising answers". The book has a wide horizon, The selection of questions too are very commendable. And the most important part is that the answers are very comprehensive and easy to understand, it's clarity and creative answers have made me more curious than before. This book is just a perfect match for anyone like me, who wants to get their mind blown, and want to unravel the surprises of the nature !
From simple, basic questions such as, “Does Astrology Work?”, to complex and convoluted subjects such as, “What is the Speed of Electricity?”, Dr. Baird is able to articulate the science of the answers in language accessible to questioners of any age and educational background, generally avoiding overwhelming the questioner with complex and non-intuitional mathematics. This is the defining attribute of a skilled educator.
Dr Baird's book "The Top 50 Science Questions" is a book I just couldn't put down. It is a fascinating read as it explains the answers to questions most of us have thought of but haven't had the time to properly think about or research. I highly recommend his book to all teachers of Science or anybody who has a curious mind.
