Anna takes us into her world and with unflinching self deprecation lays open her heart. From the playground politics of My Little Pony ownership, the tortuous twists and turns of a relationship on the rocks, the thrill of a new partner and the quiet revolution of Ginger takeover, Anna's comic touch remains deft and perfectly timed. Gingering The World From The Inside is an assured debut and demonstrates that honing work in performance before committing it to the page is, in the right hands, the creative engine of brilliance.
Anna Freeman is a lecturer in Creative Writing at Bath Spa University as well as a multiple slam-winning performance poet who has appeared at festivals across Britain including Latitude and Glastonbury. She lives in Bristol. The Fair Fight is her first novel.
Freeman has a unique voice and sense of humour, but this collection feels dominated by mostly break-up poems. I would've liked Freeman's opinions on other subjects, like politics, which I think would've slotted in nicely.
Also, I can't have been the first person to read gingering as fingering.
FUNNY! And also, for me, really relatable. I haven't ever before heard someone talk about the shame of vegan spread and homemade bread and not having THE thing at school that allows you to fit and anti-capitalist, other type parents.
Will definitely read more of her work. Definitely.
