A great book from my youth - a tour of four centuries of naval warfare through the lives of the ships that fought it. It starts with the Revenge and then takes a sometimes oblique look through the ship selections. ie not HMS Victory, but the French two decker Redoutable from whose mizzen top Nelson was shot.
Not HMS Hood or the Bismark, but HMS Warspite and the Scharnhorst

The section on USS Constitution ends with a section of a poem written to save her from the breaker's yard.

"Oh better that her shattered hulk
should sink beneath the waves
her thunder shook the mighty deep
and there should be her grave."

A requiem for all warships!
