Oh Mr Hobbs just goes from strength to strength with this delightful series starring the gorgeous Mr Badger. I just love this series!!! Leigh Hobbs has set up a wonderful world in which to tell his stories: Life at the Boubles Grand Hotel in London – a bit of a spoof on The Ritz and other such well known high end hotels.
Mr Badger is the highly valued employee of Sir and Lady Smothers-Carruthers who own the hotel. They have a thoroughly spoilt and obnoxious little grand daughter called Sylvia that Lady Celia and Sir Cecil are often charged with looking after.
In this book Mr Badger finds a mysterious mirror fixed at the top of the stairs of the Boubles Hotel and discovers that not only can he not see his own reflection in it but he is also able to crawl into it. What he finds is a seaside setting complete with a fun fair run by none other than Sir Cecil with help from his friend Algernon (the stuffed ape who normally lives in a glass case in the entrance hall of the Boubles Grand Hotel.
Sylvia takes advantage of her grandmother's preoccupation with scones and cream for afternoon tea and slips away to follow Mr Badger into the mirror.
This book adds another lovely layer of friendship between Mr Badger and Sir Cecil and Algernon – this time focussing on a sense of escaping the world of wealth and keeping up appearances.
Leigh Hobbs fabulous black and white line drawings all the way through, which provide clues and help the young readers tell the story, all the while leaving lots of room for young readers to infer what is really going on.
Another delightful tale set in a fancy hotel with an interesting cast of characters. I did enjoy the earlier one better; Sylvia didn't get up to quite enough mischief in this tale.
A quaint early chapter book series for young readers, possibly best for avid readers who will be patient with the gentle and refined narrative and do not need action to hold their attention.
