I am part siren, a hated half-breed. Forced to live in hiding, I use magic to steal and avoid the mages who would punish me for what I am. In a land ravaged by war, it's the only way to survive. The only way to feed my family.
I can change my destiny.
But when tragedy happens and the mages catch up with me, I am badly outnumbered, and if it weren't for the appearance of a stranger, I might have found myself sold to the nearest freak show, or worse. But this mysterious man doesn't help me out of the kindness of his heart. He's after something that could change my family's life forever. And I would be a fool not to help him while I try to steal it for myself.
If only my heart doesn't get in the way.
We form a tentative alliance, and suddenly, my hopes and dreams are within reach. I'll do anything to save my family, and that includes betraying a perfect stranger. So I shouldn't like when Col brushes his hand against mine, or when his voice encourages me to obey. These are only distractions, and I can't afford to forget what’s at stake.
But Col has a secret, one that will upend our quest and plunge us into harrowing danger. And I must choose between duty to my family… and duty to my heart.
Of Exile and Song is book one of the Wanderers of Ruin Series and will end on a cliffhanger. It is a spicy fantasy romance with an enemies-to-lovers quest, forced proximity, a secret identity, humor, and a slow-burn with a payoff.
This book is meant for adults 18 and over. Please check the author's website for CW/TW.
4.5 stars! I had the honour of reading an ARC of this book and I'm devastated that I'll need to wait for the next one to come out. The story pulled me in immediately and kept my attention. It was fast-paced, funny and steamy! The relationship built between the MCs felt organic. The world building was woven into the story, rather than being dumped, but it also wasn't overly descriptive to the point of bordering on boring. In summary, hurry up with the next book please!!
I received this book as an ARC and I was seriously, pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. This story follows Samara, a young women who is very familiar with just how cruel the world can be. After a robbery job goes bad, Samara finds herself in danger and on the run. This however leads to a chance encounter with the mysterious but captivating Col and an adventure of a lifetime begins. This story is a dark fantasy, within a magical land (that gave me all the LOTR vibes) ruled by a tyrant and riddled with terrifying monsters. Through these dangers our characters are plunged into a quest that will change their world.
This story also features a great romance. The relationship in this one develops very nicely and happens so naturally as well, which I love. The slow burn takes the shape of an enemies to reluctant allies to lovers situation. And trust me when I say the snarky banter was gold in this book. I truly adore these characters and I almost wish it was dual POV. However, that would probably take away from the big reveal at the end. And boy what a reveal. We do have a MAJOR cliffhanger at the end, that has me seriously dying for book 2! My one complaint (which isn’t even a complaint), is that I wished this book was longer. It really has the potential of such an amazing fantasy epic.
Anyways y’all, if you’re looking for a fantasy romance with a harrowing adventure, danger around every corner, a swoon worthy love interest, and a touch of spice, this is definitely the one!
I can safely say it's good to be back reading fantasy, or basically anything that doesn't have alphamale mafia douchebags in it, BUT.....this did fall a bit flat 😖
I liked the general storyline, the slow burn of the romance, and the characters. It moved quickly and thankfully got to a plot that i'll definately be interested in continuing to read. But on the other hand it really reminded me of every bad thing about FBAA and it moved a little bit too quickly to the point that everything felt under developed 🫢
The repetitive flirting and frankly juvenile dialogue got boring very quickly. I'm also not a huge fan of modern language/slang used in high fantasy as it tends to ruin the overall vibe. I hated the drunken bath part....no one needed that second hand cringe or footjob 🤢
Samara's over reaction in the last couple chapters was also pretty exhausting so at that point I was glad it was over. That being said I will give book 2 a read, purely just to see where the story goes 🤣
I received this book as an ARC and would like to thank the author for allowing me to read this before it’s release.
As the story starts out, it seamed to drag for me. I had to keep restarting and restarting before I could push past the first two chapters. The first chapters aid in setting the world (which makes sense, it was just kind of boring and also like why are we supposed to care about Samara’s family when we really got no backstory) but once you push past those chapters the speed picks up.
Now, throughout reading, I surmised we might have some resolution to the biggest plot point only for it to be dragged into the next book (but now I’m hooked and have to read the second one).
In all this book is a great beginning of a series and has some well fleshed out characters. Personally, I just need at least one big plot point to reach some sort of resolution.
If your a fan of forced proximity/enemy-to-lovers/slow burn this is the book for you!
I received an ARC copy of this book and am leaving a review voluntarily.
I wasn’t expecting to finish this book in a day but here we are. Each time I thought I might stop, I found myself saying “just a bit more” and I love when a book has that affect. It’s a fairly quick read, not too long, but packs a lot of emotion into short pages.
Col and Samara are a pleasure to follow. They each have their own goals and desires, with understandable motivations. Seeing them learn to trust one another felt believable and I so enjoyed their banter.
I love the layout of this world. You keep learning new things about it as the plot continues but it all feels well paced and natural. I enjoyed each new aspect as it was unveiled.
The story does end on a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to see where it goes!
I loved this book, the story building and world building was great. A little heartbreaking in the beginning, then again at the end. I laughed out loud a couple times in the middle, and even swooned several times. There are a couple spicy scenes which were well written and placed nicely. Can't wait for book 2!!
They spend the entire book awkwardly flirting. They finally sleep together. Then he IMMEDIATELY "betrays" her. She feels super hurt and gross and used. They part ways. The book ends. That's it. That's the whole book.
Why does every "enemies to lovers" book do this??? It's always icky. like he didn't even TRY to not sleep with her until being honest with her! There really wasn't a reason for him to keep that secret from her by the end anyway! It was especially uncomfortable because she totally trauma dumped on him and opened up (which, btw, was so random and abrupt after how much monologuing she did about how she could never trust him enough to tell him anything), and he was just like "damn" and totally refused to share anything about himself.
She kept pointing out his red flags and then immediately ignoring them. And then she had the audacity to act all butt hurt in the end when he "ripped the bandaid off" (I kind of feel like she overreacted??? Like idk man... yes, he totally lied by omission but like... you KNEW he wasn't telling you shit??? The whole "you just wanted to brag about fucking the siren" thing came out of NOWHERE like huh??? I didn't like this man, but you were B E G G I N G HIM to fuck you. He totally asked for consent. The entire time you knew him, you dropped the topic whenever he wouldn't talk about himself like she honestly never even pushed it so idk why she felt like his "big reveal" was some big betrayal. But yeah I didn't like reading about how gross and used she felt.
In terms of tropes, this is more strangers/dislike to lovers than enemies to lovers, which is fine, but it's advertised as enemies to lovers. As soon as they spent more than like a day together they started to like each other, so it also wasn't really slow burn. Oh my god and I HATED the feet scene. Blegh. The flirting and "banter" felt pretty juvenile and awkward honestly. Like freshmen in high school trying to flirt and make dirty jokes. OH and their first long ish conversation was SO weird??? They spoke so formally and the dialogue kept jumping between them and it just didn't flow at all. It was mostly fine after that though. I didn't like the way the smut was written either. Honestly as a whole I think I just didn't like the writing style. Example: "There are several smaller kingdoms that The Harrow is currently trying to gobble up, like the pig that he is." This was a serious moment and I practically burst out laughing like idk man I just feel like "gobble up like a pig" is NOT the best way to articulate your point here.
ALSO OH MY GOSH HOW DID I ALMOST FORGET ABOUT THIS?? SO. Guess when they decide to finally fuck. Guess. AFTER SPENDING THE ENTIRE DAY WADING THROUGH A WAR TORN BATTLE SCENE FULL OF THE DEAD AND DYING. Like. The entire section is about how brutal and awful it is. It's very descriptive. The FMC is crying the entire time. Then they find a barn to sleep in, and suddenly that sadness has transformed into horniness. Absolutely wild. SJM levels of not giving a fuck. At one point during this, the FMC literally says, and I quote, "Oh gods, I was horny." And the man says "I've never seen someone as exquisitely shaped as you." And she keeps describing his thrusts as "delicious." This is what I meant earlier when I said I didn't like the smut. Or the writing style.
Anyway uh in terms of plot, there wasn't much of it. They travel together the whole time. Forced proximity. Chasing some artifact that I still don't really understand. I like forced proximity so I didn't mind the lack of things happening, but this is definitely very character-driven (which was a problem since I didn't like the characters). I mean come on the FMC's entire identity is based around how much she cares about her little sister, but she chooses to follow this man she barely knows instead of going back to her. I'm just???? And the man was so obnoxious oh my goddd "why do you eat like that?" "Like what?" "Like every meal is your last." Dude she was SKIN AND BONE when you met her!!! All she does is talk about how poor she is!!! Why is he so stupid!!! It was honestly infuriating he was so privileged but kept trying to play the pity card like "I've seen war" okay??? Congrats?? Meanwhile the FMC keeps monologuing about how clearly he's rich and shit like yeah. Obviously. And then he has the audacity to try to chastise her about calling herself a halfbreed (derogatory) like buddy this is so not your place. Ughhhh and then she had that whole monologue about how he was actually the one taking care of HER this whole time (no he wasn't). Again, immediately before he "betrays" her.
Okay whatever I'm done. I think I would've given it 3 stars if the ending was different. It was truly just so anticlimactic and predictable, and the man's speech at the end was stupid. If you like these tropes though (and can get past the weird flirting), you'll probably still enjoy this. It's a pretty easy read. And I mean I read it in one sitting so I guess it couldn't have been THAT bad (though that was more because if I put it down, I wasn't going to pick it back up).
Of Exile and Song by Tiffany Hunt is the first book of the Wanderers of Ruin series, an adult romantic epic fantasy. Part-Siren Samara does whatever she can to survive, including using her magic even though it could get her killed. When mages catch up with her she meets a stranger who is after something she wants too. They agree to work together by Samara fully plans to turn on him to save her family. Tropes include enemies-to-lovers, banter, one horse, secret identity, and slow burn. Do check trigger warnings before reading, and this is an adults only book.
The Lovely: Several things I loved. First, the two main characters and how their relationship evolves over what is a fairly short book. And the ending was gut-wrenchingly good in regards to their relationship. I also liked the plot/premise as it flipped around some common tropes to use them in a different way.
The Mundane: For the love of intimate scenes, I need authors to stop using modern slang and colloquialisms during intimate scenes when the world is very obviously pre-modern and/or pre-industrial. Nothing breaks the mood/experience faster. (This is not a critique specific to this book - this happens to be the third book out of the last six I’ve read where the same slang was used.)
The Dreadful: I would have liked to have seen a bit more world building and more descriptions of said world. I was frequently left wondering what everything around the characters looked like, what it sounded like, etc. to really round out the reading experience.
Rating: 4/5 Stars
Recommendation: I received a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I 100 percent wanted to read this based on the blurb because it was unique. And the book definitely didn’t disappoint in that regard. If you like magic and a romantic fantasy in a not-modern world, I think you would like this book. I’m excited to read book two when it releases this fall.
I enjoyed this book. The very beginning took me a bit to get through. I'm not exactly sure why. After Samara meets Col, I couldn't put the book down. Samara, although called a "halfblood", has Siren blood. She shares in the book that her Great-grandmother was full blooded siren. I guess in the story having any siren blood counts as being half. I am not sure why I am hung up on that, but it's just me getting into the book and story. Samara has the ability to sing, which are her siren powers. With her song she can put groups of men to sleep. Samara and her best friend Flint survive and care for their families by using her power to put travelers on a desolate road to sleep to get supplies and goods to bring back to their families. When Samara and Flint go out on their next run to get supplies their only option is to follow through with their plan on a large military group traveling. Samara is able to get them to sleep and Flint and Samara find goods to steal they come across gold and beyond where the gold is hidden there is a package. Samara knew that it was something special for the fact that it was hidden behind the gold. She tries to getnit but its tucked to far and and the soldiers will be waking up soon. This was a bit of a slow burn between her and the MMC. I am hooked and all ready to read the next book in this series.
This book gripped me right away. The balance of world building plot and character development was excellent. You feel gripped by the side characters and can’t help but feel the emotions of the main lead whether it be heartbreak, rage, frustration, or the warm fuzzies.
I absolutely loved how for once, I didn’t feel like the main character was making stupid decisions. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes stupid decisions need to be made to drive the story along since for the most part, we can see what the main character doesn’t see but that wasn’t the case in this story. No dumb calls and you truly read from the perspective of the main lead. Every decision was thought out and explained and it’s rare to say I would have made the same calls ahe did.
I loved how it wasn’t an insta-love story either. You get to see the buildup of the relationship through shared experiences.
Lastly, the way the story was written and the choices made by the characters made the entire thing seem so realistic. Aside from the fact that it is indeed fiction, it was written in a way that made complete sense.
It was a quick read but really sets up the second book very well!
**I received an ARC copy of this book from the author**
4.5/5 stars
What wouldn't you do to keep the ones that you love safe? When an opportunity to break the curse that has put her family in danger arises, Samara sets out to find the one thing that might help. With danger lurking around every corner, she battles more than monsters in the night. But as her quest continues, she finds herself opening up to the stranger she travels with. What is it he is hiding and why is she inexplicably drawn to him?
Tiffany Hunt has created a world in which the good guys don't always win and the bad guys have all the power. Reminiscent of the classic epic fantasy, but with less magic, Of Exile and Song examines the emotional ties to family, duty, and self. A fantastic start to a series that will leave readers anxious for more. What will happen to Samara next? Will she ever be able to break free from the curse of her blood? This first installment leaves many questions to be answered, whetting the reader's thirst for a sequel.
Samara is different that most FMCs because she makes decisions that aren’t always agreeable but they are founded on her past experiences.
Col is a nice blend of a brooding man and an Eros type. There’s enough mystery about him that leaves you intrigued but not annoyed- much like Samara expresses.
The pace of this book was phenomenal. The romance was perfectly paced. Not too slow burn that you want to skip half the story, and not too fast that you’re wondering where the chemistry comes from.
The scene where the main characters get belligerently drunk together was my favorite. It’s refreshing to have a MMC who can be tough but also sweet but also vulnerable.
I’m eager to see more of Magnus as well as getting to meet the other 7 of Col’s friends.
The last 10 pages or so ripped my heart out and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

2.5 stars Ooof…definitely a debut book, lol. The dialogue was a bit choppy and forced, the world-building shallow, and the character development left a lot to be desired. Then there were some awkward moments that really pulled me out of the story. Samara having diarrhea in the woods? That felt unnecessary and not something most readers want from their FMC. The bathtub scene with the feet? Uhm…no thank you. And then the knife play that came out of nowhere (albeit mild and easy to skim past)…completely unexpected!
I did check the trigger warnings on her website since the book is billed as dark fantasy (I’ve been burned before), but that particular element wasn’t listed—which was frustrating.
That being said, I still enjoyed the overall story and plan to read book 2, if only to see how everything plays out. I’ll just go in knowing her trigger warnings aren’t entirely complete, so I’ll be better prepared for whatever comes next.
Of Exile and Song By: Tiffany Hunt Release date: April 25
I had the honor of receiving an eARC to Tiffany’s dark fantasy debut novel!
To care for her family in hiding, Samara (a half-breed) is forced to thieve for survival. After a robbery takes a tragic turn, she crosses paths with Col, who is searching for a rare item that will alter the course of both of their lives. Striking a deal, they journey together through treacherous terrain, encountering monsters, while staying one step ahead of the enemies army. The playful banter between the main characters was the perfect balance in between the most anxious moments.
Tiffany does a wonderful job weaving the world building into the storyline without overwhelming the reader. The main characters are well developed leaving room for growth as the series continues. Leaving us with a subtle cliffhanger, Book 2 will be one of my most anticipated releases! For fantasy lovers, I highly recommend adding this one to your TBR list.
This was a really solid book, especially for a debut. No grammar or spelling issues that I noticed. The relationship between the two main characters was well developed and believable. I agree with another reviewer that the the last 10% felt a bit rushed and then just seemed to stop rather than truly ending.
However, the characters were strong enough, and the hook for the next book strong enough that I didn't mind the weaker ending. I spent the entire book wanting to know what would happen next to these characters, and I was immediately disappointed to see that the next book isn't out yet, which is why it's a solid 4.
Trope wise, it's not quite enemies to lovers. More mysterious stranger to lovers. But I love a good mysterious love interest with an obviously secret backstory and magic.
Had this book on my Kindle for a while and, I have a large TBR list. That's the only reason I didn't read it sooner. My only regret is *not* reading this sooner. Her story kept my attention from the first page. Her characters had me rooting for them and made me feel like I was traveling along with them. Some of my favorite tropes are in this book. MFC that's not cookie cutter, a MMC that has secrets and can be broody. Strangers to ....not ;) One bed, cinnamon roll vibes,....there's magic, suspense, loss, battles, banter, *serious topics discussed*, spice, more secrets, a quest, good vs evil, the feeling of betrayal, moments that'll make you laugh, be sad, make you blush etc.
Already have the second book and will be starting that tomorrow. I'm officially a fan.
Of exile and song is a story of a half sirem living in a world that hates half breeds. Wanting to protect her sister and help them survive she finds herself in some sticky situations. Samara is everything you want from a fmc she has spunk character and makes you fall in love with her antics. You then get your mmc and well what can you say every one has a secret but cols is no where near what you are expecting and this book leaves you wanting and needing more. Tiffany hunt writes amazingly and leaves you on the edge of your seat waiting to see where the next twist will be and i cant wait to continue reading this book.
This was such a fun slow burn romantasy! We follow a halfling siren, and a mysterious man taking an adventure together to find a taken item that could tear the realm apart. We get to watch their romance slowly bloom, and enjoy their witty banter, all while joining their trek to find the stolen item.
Was easy to follow along and the main characters were likable/ relatable throughout the story.
This book includes steamy scenes, and graphic fight scenes, please check authors trigger warnings!
I was lucky to have this as an ARC and I finished this in less than 24 hours so for me it was very, very good as its been a long time since I've read a book in such a short amount of time.
I loved Samara and thought her character was very relatable, and Col the MMC was the Morally Grey asshole you grow to love! The story and plot kept me turning pages and the sprinkle of romance with that slow burn was perfection!
I can't wait for book 2 as that ending! I'm excited and counting down the days till I can devour the next part of this story✨️
I loved this story from the moment I picked it up, and devoured it in one day. There is raw gritty emotion and light hearted laughs. The characters are great and the way Tiffany has made the MC so relatable. My heart hurt for her and many times I chuckled. Very good read and I definitely recommend for any fantasy lover. There is a slow burn romance that I feel is very balanced. It doesn’t over power the plot but keeps you highly entertained. I’ll be watching this author and devouring any other books in the series. Well done Ms Hunt!
// Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review, thank you 🤍 // This was so good! The next one will be out soon right?...right? 🥲 I'm invested now, I can't wait to read what happens next! There's nothing better than a good enemies to lovers, with some sprinkled in saucy remarks along the way, just try to fight me ⚔️
It was a short and sweet, fast-paced, easy read, that knew how to keep your attention span. I loved this story, and the cover is also stunning, and definitely eye catching!
I received this book as an ARC and I was immediately impressed with the authors imaginative characters and story line. The book follows the main character, Samara, on a journey filled with danger, mystery, and even some romance! The story ends on a cliffhanger - book two has not yet been published - but I cannot wait to continue this journey and see why happens next! Tiffany Hunt is a phenomenal author that has created a world any fantasy reader will love to delve into!
This had a far more YA feel than I expected (as I normally don't read YA) but it was enjoyable! I loved the adventure and travel. The Drunken scene was SO GOOD! The reveal at the end was great and I 100% appreciate the fact that at the end Samara had a sense of self worth and stood up for herself.
Overall it was a very enjoyable read and I loved the portrayal of sirens, especially in a land setting.
Devoured this! Samara’s story as a siren and Col as that cliffhanger prince has me ready for the next one. Sad there isn’t even talk or release on it. I’ve seen descriptions of YA but it definitely is not. Plenty of slow burn and includes spiciness. I’m a little sad it was at the end and tainted with negative depictions after. All the more reason to hope for the second book sooner rather than later.

Of Exile and Song is about a half siren that is trying to keep her family alive. When she is thrown into the path of a stranger she finds a way she can help her family but it requires her to be near this stranger she doesn’t want to trust. I really enjoyed the characters and the writing was really good. I can’t wait to read book 2.
I was hoping for banter similar to the dark Lord's guide to dating. So in that respect I was disappointed. The story is good and moved along well. There was a neat twist added at the end. I was also hoping for that same yearning aspect as the dark lord book, and that wasn't there either. So again a bit disappointed. Cliffhanger ending so of course I keep reading
This was a surprise for me. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Action, adventure, character building, slow burn enemy to lover romance. It had it all. Some parts seemed a little stuttery but really it was overall a good flow. Highly recommend for those who like a little romance and spice with their action.
I found this book to be so boring. I never wanted to pick it up and even reading a chapter a day was a struggle. Everything was rushed and simplistic. Also, the enemies part of the romance lasted like three chapters. Sadly, another disappointing read for me. I only pushed through it because it was on the shorter side and I hate DNFing two books in a row.
3.75🌟 I didn't expect to like the book so much! I loved the characters so much especially Col - he was so gentle and understanding and held his own principles for human life. Their relationship felt like something had to have happened as they spent so much time together. Honestly felt like this book was 300 pages because of how long much happened in a single chapter.
I loved everything about this book and I devoured it in just two days! Mysterious, sassy, action packed with magic and a dash of comedic relief! This book is up there with maas and armentrout and is a new favorite of mine! Can't wait for the next book!
