Είναι συγκλονιστικό το πώς έβλεπαν την τρέλα (αυτό που αποκαλούμε σήμερα ψυχική ασθένεια) την εποχή του Μεσαίωνα, της Αναγέννησης, της Κλασικής εποχής και μέχρι τον 19ο αιώνα και τον Φρόυντ. Τα διαφόρων ειδών βασανιστήρια και οι πρακτικές που περιγράφονται είναι φρικιαστικά. Διαβάζοντας αυτό το βιβλίο διαπίστωσα ότι σαν δυτική κοινωνία έχουμε κάνει μεγάλη πρόοδο (σε σχέση με τις προηγούμενες εποχές) στην απενοχοποίηση της ψυχικής ασθένειας και στο πώς την αντιμετωπίζουμε εμείς και η επιστημονική
