Judith Rich That was my view too - would explain her hitting the kid with the shovel - and her thoughts about getting her nephew to stop crying

TN Templeton I actually disagree. Keiko does care about some people, just not in the terms that are the societal norm. She expresses wanting to see her family, wanting them to not worry, feeling guilt/fear/anxiety based around their reactions to what she's done. Though her expression of this is limited, that's not always uncommon for people on the spectrum. I think that getting inside her head, it might be jarring to view it how she does, but the subtleties of emotional connection were there in her own unique ways.

Esther SANCHEZ I agree with TN Templeton, same passages came to mind

Tom Definitely agree with the above two posters. The point is that Keiko does indeed care about others - the whole way she has structured her life is to make others more comfortable around her. The whole reason she hit the boy with the shovel was that others wanted the fight to stop. The whole problem with autism, which Keiko says over and over again without using the word, is that something is different in her way of interpreting the world which causes a failure of understanding between her and other people.
