Speaking as a former resident of the Cleveland area, there IS public transportation to Shaker Heights. Cleveland does not have a subway system, but they have a limited rail system called Rapid Transit, which does go through Shaker Square. If Bebe could walk to Shaker Square, she could easily take the train downtown and then transfer to the train that goes out to the airport. Cleveland also has an extensive bus system, but it's basically set up to take commuters from the suburbs to downtown. So if you're just trying to get around your own town, it's not much help. But I was also puzzled about how she could afford a plane ticket.
In my mind, when I read that, Mia gave her the money. But I don't know exactly what I read that made me think that.
I don’t think Mia knew she was going to kidnap May Ling and I don’t think young children needed a passport back then, they traveled on their mothers documents, the known threats that are around now days - terrorising, international kid napping - weren’t prominent issues.
