Zachariah Except Angela isn't a rape victim. She's a fictional character in a book written by Garcia Marques. And he's not doubting anyone - he literally created the characters you feel he is mistreating, along with the rather absurd situation in which they all find themselves. Like, what is that about?!

Plus, in this case, you're whole "abuse victims don't come forward because they know that nobody will believe them" is shot through because the simple fact of the matter is her entire family DOES believe her, immediately and without hesitation. It's almost as if her deflowering were merely the catalyst chosen by the author to facilitate a believable reason to hold a revenge killing.

And can I also point out that rape clearly isn't too much of a concern in this fictional culture/society, as her family has no qualms with Angela consummating an arranged marriage with a man she clearly has no real feelings for.

If you weren't so wrapped up in spewing radfem nonsense you might have realized that the identity of her true lover is irrelevant. The author probably doesn't even know because it was never the point.

Maritina Mela You have no idea what you're talking about Zachariah, so I'm gonna stop you right there, because no one is taking you seriously.
"She is not a rape victim she is a fictional character" wow. And Lavinia was a fictional character AND a rape victim, what are you gonna do about that?
And yes, even to this day, abuse victims don't come forward because they are not believed.
Now, back to other comment: I personally cannot tell if she was raped or not and if it was by Santiago or by someone else. What I do know, is that Santiago was indeed being inappropriate (to put it mildly) with the girl you mentioned and yeah, people like him do stuff like that and then go on with their lives. So I wouldn't put it past him to be not the lover, but the rapist of Angela.
But even if she wasn't actually raped, the fact that we see her being abused for not being a virgin, is infuriating. Same as the fact that years later she fell in love with her abuser. Stockholm syndrome much?
