Carolyn That's ridiculous. I have never understood why this book is so revered--not even back in the 1960s when I first read it. To me, Holden Caulfield was just another boring boy. And if you think that people who don't like this book aren't cool, YOU aren't cool.

Jackie Pretentious much?

message 3: by Elen (new)

Elen Im not cool :) but I love this book . To be honest i felt so sad when reading it and felt Holden was lost , mixed up and lonely. One review I read the woman said she would give him a good shake and tell him to pull himself together. A friend of my son around this age had depression couldnt get out of bed and was in a dark place . Hes in his 40s now Holdens character reminded me a bit of this boy. Holdens brothers death had a huge impact on him but did he ever talk how he was feeling . When his room mate asked him to do his English homework for him and he wrote about his brothers baseball glove thought that was touching . Go on Carolyn give it another try. Parts of it had me laughing out loud.

Laurie Mc I'm not sure how anyone could "hate" this book. Don't we all see ourselves in Holden? Just a little bit? This world is really phony and Holden is right on the mark. I can't get enough of this story. Stuart, you're right it helps us live with those who don't get it.

message 5: by Ronin (new)

Ronin Carolyn, you are the perfect example of what Stuart was describing.

message 6: by Jackie (new)

Jackie I didn't like the book either but to each his own. I just think it's very condescending to say those that do have to manage somehow to live in a world of those that don't as if we are cretins and lesser creatures. I didn't like the book. So what? I'm sure I like others that some don't. So what? We can talk about the book's pros and cons but when if someone start ad hominem attacks for someone's tastes that's when it shows more about the person doing the attacking than the attacked.

message 7: by Elen (new)

Elen please read it again. its really so good and very sad. The first time I read it I wasnt sure but a couple of years later I read it again . Its so good . So sad really

message 8: by Jackie (new)

Jackie I wont be reading it again. There are too many good books in the world i'll never have time to read to go back and force myself to try and like one that i dont. I'm glad some find it so good. It's just not to everyone's taste.

message 9: by Zully (new)

Zully man this novel has layers, superficially and intrinsically satisfying. Those don't appreciate and value depth in stories have no business with empathy.

message 10: by Stuart (new)

Stuart David Plenty of people understand me, DeeBooDeeBooDa. The people who love Catcher in The Rye. And I understand them. We are simply forced to live in a world RUN by the fools who don't understand Catcher In The Rye. And we understand those buffoons only TOO well. Just like Holden Caulfield understands them only too well.

Derek Gag me.

Evil MortyMan Looks something that a real phony would write. ;;))

message 13: by Jen (new)

Jen I really like the book too, but this doesn't seem like the approach to take. Yes it's a book that either clicks or doesn't, but you can't decry everyone that it doesn't gel with. The whole point of Holden is to have empathy, and I don't mean in some Jesus suffering for the sins of others way, just being considerate. Otherwise you end up hating everyone and that's no way to be.

Also it does particularly annoy me that so many of its detractors shit on the character, while simultaenously claiming to be really into mental health.

message 14: by Diane (new)

Diane Thanks for lumping all of the rest of us who "don't get it" into one category (sarcasm). I actually do "get it," I just don't particularly like it, but that doesn't make me a problem for other people.

message 15: by Hugo (new)

Hugo Bernard People who love this book are a bunch of phonies, it kills me, it really does. They take themselves all serious and all, it goddamn kills me. I get it though, there are some qualities in his work, but when he tries so much he's so good it's like if he isn't trying no more and then it's just phony, Only morons like this stuff, smart people can't take this stuff seriously, only phonies, but you can't blame them. (by the way, I love this book :)

message 16: by Jen (new)

Jen lol, of course you had to include 'sarcasm' in parenthesis Diane. Do you use Reddit by any chance?

message 17: by TamaR (new)

TamaR I don't like the book. I get that there is a message it tries to deliver and there is a reason that "Holden" is now an appellation. I get that Salinger is a one of the one of the greatest writers. So is Dickens. And I keep falling asleep while reading those two.
Do not divide. There is no YOU and US. EVERYONE is different and thank God for that.
