Okay... People get too offended over simple things these days. Now before I start my sorta rant here's a disclaimer: I can respect people who have different opinions than mine, so here is my opinion:

In response to what you said if you're comment:
1) The only thing that would make you think that everyone would want to sleep with her was that Lewis talked to all of the guys about hitting on her. That's protocol and was probably for the better

2) Mindy's beauty had nothing to do with her status.

3) Mark Watney cries a lot in the book. And it's scientifically proven that women cry more than men. It's not sexist, it's a fact.

4) The joke was lighthearted and meant to be taken as a joke. They wouldn't be working with them if they thought that they were majorly superior.

5) The saying "Oh Gods" isn't racist. If you have multiple gods why would you say "oh god" also the remark about the multiple gods was to show how much they were hoping for Mark's survival.

6) What is wrong with referring to your own ethnicity?? Is your race just something to be ignored?

7) Is rape something to be ignored? For crying out loud, the guy's alone in space, is he not allowed to think/say whatever the hell he wants?

8) Wow... Just wow.... People get so offended by slight comments these days...

9) I have gay friends who always joke around with each other saying "that's so gay" this just proves that you get offended easily...

What has become of this world? All of these things are simple things that you don't need to throw a fit about!

Justina, please don't take this the wrong way but do you not have an non-white friends?
My non-white friends make those kinds of jokes about their ethnicity all the time.

1. why is this sexist? maybe Beth is a very attractive person. If a very attractive man was on a ship with lots of women, might they not race to be the one to hook up with him?

from your description her dad does sound like a total creep though i'll give you that


3. it is a stereotype, but generally women cry more than men (although not in my case as a guy I cry very easily and many times watching the film)

however maybe some of the men feel like crying but are afraid to be seen as sensitive.

4. i think this is just a throwaway comment, i'm sure whenever two groups of people work together these comments are made privately, i don't think its racist

6. i think its completely plausible somebody of a different ethnicity might make this joke about themselves, i didn't feel it was demeaning.

8. its totally normal for a human of either sex trapped alone to miss having sex. many men do tend to have very high sex drives so this is a very realistic portrayal of a man too. i don't see how this alone is demeaning - if he was gay he'd be saying the same thing about men.

9. this was just a joke, i didn't see it as homophobic.
