I mentioned earlier the idea of a return to Lodi—although I know that “a return to Lodi” is too vague an idea to set the wheels in motion. Alternatively, it occurs to me that Darthaca is large and unvisited so far. I see it's quite a long way from Vilnoc, on the far side of Penric’s origins in the cantons, so he’d need some strong motive to go there.
More plausibly, Penric could well have visited Darthaca in his younger days, when he was based in Martensbridge. A possible flashback story…
As the children grow older, perhaps they can start to play some role in the plot—but what role? It would be awkward if one of them acquired a demon. Perhaps one of them could encounter another child who’s acquired a demon—unknown to any adult?
Incidentally, I claim no ownership of any idea here; I’m just a reader, not a writer of fiction.
I keep trying to picture the interactions with Pen as the father of a 13 year old and the three of them trying to raise a child together. not really a story hook, more a vignette. The idea of children as hostages to fate also comes to mind, but that seems like a trope that fits Miles more than Pen, and you did that with the toxin an Aral and Cordelia.
I was thinking of a child a good deal younger than 13. That comes later; although it’s also an interesting period.
