Useful comments from everyone. My primary concern with issues as those addressed here are what is normalized that a POC is just supposed to endure in their bodies. We already have to let so much of normalized negative stereotypes become a part of us, causing so many types of health issues related to these stressors. I am glad that the author did some self reflection. This is huge. White self reflection. White accountability. So, it's not just a matter of being prejudiced against a book. It's about protecting oneself from yet another fucking slight or microaggression. I do plan to read the book know that the author has learned something from this. I may or may not wait for the next printing.
Please stop summarising us as "white people". Europe has 41 distinct countries and cultures. I was born and grew up in an ex-communist country and my life does not compare in any way to someone who grew up in the UK, France, Germany, let alone the US. And you as someone born in any of those countries are more privileged than I am because of the passport you own and are treated better than I am in those countries. And regarding stereotypes and misrepresentation, the Slavic culture has one of the worst representations in the world. Every movie made in the US features a terrorist that wants to nuke the world who comes from Russia or 'insert Slavic country name'. Stereotypes of how Slavic men are mafia and we the women are wh**es and pr****tutes are even more damaging, but none of you defend us because you sum us all up as "white people". That is very hypocritical of you!
There are 54 countries in Africa, yet we call all of them "black people". Just because someone was born in the U.S it does not make them have a better life than you do. You don't know what people go through. I do agree you should have better representation in media too but the way you phrased your own comment is pretty hypocritical. Out of the U.K, France, Germany, and the U.S, the U,S is far from the best one. You are acting like PoC in in these countries can't complain because someone else has had it worse, comparing misery does nothing. Suffering is all the same and we should be lifting each other up instead. That goes for people of all colors. We should learn from each others experiences instead of seeing who has the strongest sob story.
