Mary JL I agree that there is much more that could be done to improve our knowledge of history; but as you point out, the entire system is NOT wrong. There are many, good, hardworking history teachers out there trying to give as balanced a picture as they can.

Virginia Which is why he dedicated the book to "teachers who teach against their textbooks." I think the point of the book is that these types of teachers you guys are mentioning (hardworking, trying to be balanced) are far and few between. For the vast majority of students, what the textbook gives is ALL they get. Just because a few teachers are able to think outside the textbook box & actually care to get their students to think for themselves, does not mean the schooling system as a whole is not worth condemning.
