Caitlin I loved this book! I think my favourite aspect may have been that the author didn't shy away from how the surviving mythology can portray women as unimportant, evil, or just plain there to be pretty, but then added her own take to round them out and make their characters more fully realized.
Did anyone else see the portrayal of the gods as catty, terrible people as a commentary on famous people? "You think you'll want to be like them, but trust me... there's a lot of backstabbing and you'd rather just be mortal."

Tassie Dave Most myths have them as petty, terrible characters.

I can see the link to today's obsession with celebrity, and how "they", when too bright a light is shone on them, don't live up to the idealistic picture their fans have of them.

BTW most mythical scholars have Aiaia (Aeaea) on the western side of Greece, not the eastern. (Adriatic or Ionian Sea)

Real Housewives of the Mediterranean, perhaps ;-)

Side note: Anytime I see "Real Housewives" in any title, I know they are anything but. Not that I'd watch trashy "reality" TV shows like that.

John (Taloni) Taloni When I saw the title all I could think of was the Season 2 spinoff, "Real Stablecleaners of the Augean."

terpkristin I hadn't thought about the Real Housewives comparison, but yeah, it fits.

Disclaimer: I do not watch Real Housewives on the regular, but when my sister was helping me out after spine surgery, she watched it from time to time. She also watched a lot of Project Runway. That one I do watch regularly. ;)

Tassie Dave It has become a franchise now. There is even an Aussie version. "Real Housewives of Melbourne". Never watched it, but it's the same concept. Rich socialites with too much plastic surgery, fighting with other rich socialites.

I had a look and there was a "Real Housewives of the Aegean", sort of (it's on the Aegean Sea coast) ;-)
The Real Housewives of Athens

I agree! One of my favorite things about this book is how much it reminded me of The Mists of Avalon ... that retelling of an "evil witch" who's really the unevil, misunderstood backbone of the famous (male) hero's story.

message 9: by Christos (new)

Christos I liked Mists of Avalon don't get me wrong but I feel like they took such a great classic villain and they forced the story to make her a hero which annoyed me, just like that horrible movie Malificent. I don't feel that way about Circe, I thought everything she did felt natural.

No one is the villain of their own story.
