Start with The Hobbit. While you'll often see tags 'he wrote it for children' (as if that is somehow a reason for ignoring it) his story telling was much cleaner in The Hobbit. And wonderfully crafted scenes.
The Hobbit. Both are great, but like Game of Thrones, one wouldn't begin with book 2. The Hobbit comes first.
The Hobbit comes first. It is a wonderful self contained fable and introduced thenotion of a fellowship and the fantastical world of middle earth. Without it The Fellowship would be soulless.
I've seen all three LOTR movies and only just read The Hobbit. Having gone backwards, I agree with everyone else; read The Hobbit first. Enjoy!
I just finished The Hobbit and have since acquired the Lord of The Rings series. I loved The Hobbit and would (just as everyone else) recommend it first.
