Everyone has two (at the minimum) identities--a public personna and a private one. Our public personna tends to be a good deal more polished than the one we keep hidden. Gatsby copped a pose that carried him to riches and perdition. Except for the few Warren Buffets of this world, every billionaire has skeletons in their closet.
I recall from hs days the second paragraph of Teri´s posting. Teachers argued that the book highlighted the limits of social mobility and although one may gain riches, not only the social polish but the means to that excess of wealth were also in the judgment. Wolfsheim was impressed with Jay´s social demeanor and academic credentials, regardless of the fact that his Oggsford years were but six months of a military post war training session, if jay is to be believed.
But to the Eggsonian elites, jay was but an upstart whose riches and claim to inherited wealth were suspect. jay is not a convincing liar, and even a naive Nick is sceptical of his claims of gallivanting around Europe in search of rubies and diamonds.
...Nick is sceptical of his claims of gallivanting around Europe in search of rubies and diamonds.
And yet, after Jay shows him the engraved medal from Montenegro and the photo of him at Oxford, Nick apparently swallows that line, because later, when Gatsby's showing Daisy around his place, Nick says he almost asked to see the rubies.
