A thorough and applied introduction to ecological modeling, but unfortunately too out-of-date to use with the newest MATLAB student version. For a tutorial in a stat program, use Bolker's Ecological Models and Data in R. Roughgarden does a great job of explaining ecological modeling and ecological theory. Just don't spend $99 bucks on MATLAB and expect this text to do much for you.
