I think God's word as expressed in the Holy Bible is unmatched. I have learned so much from my time in the word. Through the Holy Bible, God teaches me truths that truly have set me free to live a happier and more fulfilled life. That's here and now. But the best benefits are the eternal ones.

it just transforms you..

Really good book. Only got through Kings then I skipped ahead to the angry prophets. Hosea is the funniest. Leviticus is hilarious. The repetition involved in how to make the curtains properly around the arc of the covenant could be made into a performance art piece.
I deeply love and respect how the ancient Jewish religious scribes and priests did not sanitize what my religion of birth calls the Old Testament. It's a profane, violent, morally ambiguous text that is just as tricky and bizarre an

What can you say about the Bible? It is a truly monumental work of faith. There is a bit of repetition in places but it is okay. It is the censuses that can get you down. The poetry of the Bible is magnificent.

The Old Testament revision is very accurate by conservative Christian standards. It tries to stay true to the original Hebrew wording while using American English. The New Testament revision isn't as well done. The ASV is a 1901 American revision of the 1881-1885 English Revised Version, which was a revision of the King James Version. I found it more helpful for detailed Old Testament study than most modern versions. The English is a little awkward for casual or devotional reading though.

I've made a goal many times to read through the Bible in a year, but never made that goal. This year I did, and I accomplished that goal with time to spare, to study different prophets and the history for the next few months.
So thankful for this book....

It was good. I can really feel the holy Christ in me. He is calling my name and I now can answer.

The Bible

This is the true Word of God. Read and study it and believe all of it for it is true and able to save you to the uttermost.

Reading through the Bible in 2015 was a bit more of a chore than I remember it being in 2013. Partially because I did not have the built-in 2+ hour bus commute for half the year, but also because the American Standard Version has a much greater propensity for bringing a glaze over my eyes. Meaning the language was needlessly arcane as related to my need for authenticity. Meaning I am now even more open to translations like The Message that favor an intelligible rendering of the texts' spirit ove ...more

The importance of this book to Western culture cannot be overstated, and that was my primary motivation for slogging through the mighty tome. After reading it cover to cover, my opinion of it as literature has greatly increased, but my opinion of the religious teachings has sunk even lower. Biggest positive surprise: how many common expressions have their origins here. Biggest negative surprise: how exceedingly unlikable Paul was. I expected him to be a homophobe, misogynist, prude, and general ...more
