Cheiro was a pseudonym for William John Warner, (November 1, 1866 - October 8, 1936) who was an Irish astrologer and colorful occult figure of the early 20th century. His sobriquet, Cheiro, derives from the word cheiromancy, meaning palmistry. He was a self-described clairvoyant who taught palmistry, astrology, and Chaldean numerology. During his career, he was celebrated for using these forms of divination to make personal predictions for famous clients and to foresee world events.
I was recommended this book by my own Numerologist in 2015 who had done vast studies on Occult Science and this book played a pivotal role in he becoming a Numerologist also this book was written in 1935.Now I keep often coming back to this book for assistance because I myself practice Numerology. This is the 2nd time I have read this book and have realized that I have added more to my knowledge of the subject Numbers and Numerology than the last time, still there is a lot to learn and will need to keep coming back to this books.I also believe that Subjects like these require a lot or research and re reading of books in order to deepen your knowledge.

Now there are various types of NUMEROLOGY methods the ones more famous are CHALDEANS or Eastern Method of NUMEROLOGY (in this method alphabets are numbered between 1-8) the other method widely in use is PYTHAGOREAN method or Western method of numerology (in this method alphabets are numbered between 1-9 )
This book is on CHALDEAN NUMEROLOGY even the great CHERIO Followed this method of numerology in his calculations of numbers.

He predicted many events which were published in his book of Memoirs CONFESSIONS : MEMOIRS OF A MODERN SEER.
I would higly recommend this book to all those who are learning or wish to learn the subject NUMEROLOGY altough the book could be written in more detail regarding the subject.
I was recommended this book by someone who extolls it's virtue highly. Although I am not about to denigrate the integrity of this book, I have to admit I was somewhat disappointed at its content. This book is really small and meagre. The writings are extremely simple.
I was told that this one is the basis of all numerology, so I was expecting a book with the details of the Upanishads - but - be surprised, for the book is like a summary of the numbers.
I know this is a book of numerology, but I found this helped me do standard maths better. Its like giving a personality to the numbers helped me see them as a family that played together and I could imagine interactions based on these personalities.
I first encountered Cheiro’s Book of Numbers in 1998, and it was not just a casual read — it was a book that reshaped the way I perceived destiny, chance, and the hidden rhythm of life.
Written by the famous Irish clairvoyant William John Warner, better known as Cheiro, this work on numerology is part manual, part memoir, and part mystical revelation. Its impact lies less in rigorous scholarship and more in its ability to evoke a sense of wonder about the unseen influence of numbers in human existence.
Cheiro, who lived during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was something of a celebrity occultist. He read the palms and numbers of politicians, monarchs, and cultural icons, from Mark Twain to Oscar Wilde.
The Book of Numbers distills his experiences and methods, offering readers a structured but highly accessible system of numerology. It promises to explain how the date of one’s birth and the numerical value of one’s name can reveal hidden truths about personality, fortune, and even the timing of critical life events.
What makes this book enduring is its sheer readability. Cheiro avoids heavy esoteric jargon and instead writes in a style that is engaging, conversational, and often dramatic. He peppers his explanations with anecdotes of famous clients, recounting how their lives followed the numerical patterns he outlines. For someone picking up the book with curiosity, these stories lend a sense of credibility — though to sceptics, they can feel more like stagecraft than science.
The central idea is straightforward: each number from 1 to 9 carries a distinct vibration and meaning. The day of birth (known as the birth number) and the sum of the full birth date (the destiny number) shape an individual’s life path.
Cheiro assigns qualities to each number — ambition and leadership for 1, diplomacy for 2, creativity for 3, discipline for 4, and so forth. When these numbers are aligned harmoniously, life flows smoothly; when they clash, one faces obstacles.
Reading this in 1998, I found myself irresistibly drawn into the system. Like many readers, I tested Cheiro’s formulas on myself, my family, and friends. To my surprise, the descriptions often seemed uncannily accurate.
The sense that numbers could explain personality quirks or even foreshadow events was electrifying. It was not so much about blind belief as it was about the excitement of perceiving hidden patterns beneath ordinary reality. For someone who had never engaged with mysticism before, the book acted as a gateway to a broader universe of symbolic thought.
However, a critical reading must acknowledge the limits. Cheiro’s numerology is a product of its time — a blend of Western occult traditions, Chaldean and Kabbalistic influences, and a fascination with “Oriental wisdom” that was common in late Victorian spiritual circles. His claims are not grounded in scientific evidence, and many of his predictions read more like generalised archetypes than precise revelations.
Yet, to dismiss the book outright would miss the point. Its value lies not in empirical accuracy but in its psychological and cultural resonance.
For many readers, Cheiro provides a language to articulate their inner intuitions. Numbers, after all, are universal, and the symbolic associations Cheiro attaches to them have an archetypal allure. Even if one rejects the literal truth of his system, the book can still function as a mirror — a way of reflecting on one’s strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations through a different lens.
Looking back on my reading experience, I realise that The Book of Numbers changed my life not because it handed me absolute truths but because it opened my mind to the idea that reality is layered with meaning. It taught me to pay attention to patterns, coincidences, and the mysterious order of things. That shift in perception — from randomness to significance — is perhaps the greatest gift Cheiro offered.
In conclusion, Cheiro’s Book of Numbers is less a definitive guide to fate and more a cultural artefact of mystical thought, a text that continues to inspire, provoke, and enchant.
Whether one approaches it as a believer, a sceptic, or a curious seeker, it has the power to spark reflection and wonder.
For me, the memory of reading it in 1998 is inseparable from the feeling of discovering that numbers could tell stories — stories not just about others, but about myself.
Note: This is a review of the rare 1986 Arrow edition of the book.
Firstly, I’d like to thank Liberty Books for not only providing me with one but two Arrow publications of Cheiro’s works namely Language of the Hand and Cheiro’s Book of Numbers.
These gems are available free to read online on sites such as the Internet Archive, Project Gutenberg, etc., but there is just something classic about reading a class rendition of a work and writer you are passionate about.
There are many chapters and in this short review it would be impossible to cover all of them but the basis of the book is Birth Numerology which is the day you are born regardless of the month. For example, you’re born on the 5th of January and your best friend is born on the 14th of May that means that you are a Birth Number 5 (5 + 0 = 5) and your buddy is also a Birth Number 5 (1 + 4 = 5).
But Cheiro’s take of Numerology doesn’t just stop at revealing personality types through dates of birth, but also, he takes into account how these numbers impact our daily lives. His system is quite complex and for the modern viewer I’d suggest watching my favorite Numerology channel Auspicious Numerology where Dr. Sumit Meshram kindly explains these complicated terms in his own simple, laidback way.
Cheiro also wrote this book brilliantly as he was able to transcribe letters which he received from non-celebrities during the time he wrote popular columns in newspapers. At the same time, he gave Numerological accounts of the careers of the American Presidents during pivotal points in their careers such as crucial dates concerning taking seat as President, surviving or not surviving assassination attempts, and other important decisions famous Presidents such as Woodrow Wilson, FDR, etc., made during their respective tenures.
Although, Cheiro’s system utilizes a unique mix of Astrology and Numerology, his work on compound numbers which match with Tarot (which I myself have very less knowledge about) is profound and has never been done before.
Language of the Hand is the most comprehensive study of the art of Palmistry by Cheiro. Likewise, Cheiro’s Book of Numbers is the most all-embracing work in regards to Numerology. This book is about 200 pages in length but its literal scope covers a wide range of topics like Chaldean Numerology which Cheiro states is the most ancient form of Numerology ever written about. Hence, Chaldean Numerology forms the origin point of Numerology itself. He then traces the ancient occult learnings onwards through the Hebrews and all the way till the Bible. How numbers play a crucial role in the numbering of religious texts especially in the latter book.
But, alas, Cheiro’s Book of Numbers is too fatalistic for these modern times. It’s an excellent book for a student but just like the lines on the palm change, so is destiny through Astrology and Numerology not fixed. This is the only flaw I found in this phenomenal piece of occult literature.
