Era Zistel may just be the finest American writer about animals, and Good Companions is certainly one of her best books. As she and her companions -- a cat, a goat and a chipmunk -- pass their days together, she contemplates her friends' abilities to enjoy what life offers, never regretting or dreading nature's events as humans do.

I've read this book several times. And it never ceases to move me to my core. She writes such beautiful simple prose and can bring you to your knees in one short sentence. An incredible look at animals and their lives that we don't often take time to observe.
