Farm #0.5

Love Means Courage

Rate this book

Len Parker is laid off during the recession in the early eighties and decides to go back to college at home in rural Michigan, where he reconnects with his best friend from high school, Ruby. He's overjoyed when she marries Cliff Laughton and overcome with sorrow when she dies an untimely death, leaving behind her husband and two-year-old son.

Out of work again, Len finds a job at Cliff Laughton's sorely neglected farm. Cliff is still mourning his wife, struggling to raise his son, and has little enthusiasm or energy left for work. Len immediately begins to whip the farm—including the two Laughtons—into shape. Working side by side, Len and Cliff grow ever closer, but loving another man takes a lot of courage. They'll have to stand together as they face faltering business, threatening drought, misguided family, and Midwestern prejudices to protect what might be a lifelong love.

A Love Means... story.

Andrew Grey is one of my favorite authors. His book are a must buy for me because they make me feel all kinds of emotions when I read them. There is something about the way he connects us with his characters and brings us into their lives that really resonate with me.

Love Means Courage is a difficult book to review. I don't want to give much away about it so I've decided to just relate my feelings about this wonderful book without getting too much into the storyline.

Love Means Courage is actually the prequel to Love Means No Shame. I read Love Means No Shame first, because it's actually the first book in this series. Knowing what happens to Len and Cliff years down the line left me feeling bittersweet and melancholy throughout this book. I'm not saying it took away my enjoyment of reading their love story, but it definitely made an impact on my feelings toward Len and Cliff, and how much I enjoyed their story.

I can't recommend both Love Means No Shame and Love Means Courage enough. I do think they needed to be read in the order Mr. Grey intended, so don't cheat and try to read this one first!

There were several times throughout the book I found myself tearing up and cheering Cliff and Len on. I loved them. The connection they have with one another and the determination they have to be together and build a stable and happy family with each other and young Geoff was wonderful; despite the obstacles in their path and the things they had to overcome made me love them that much more.

I loved this book in general and I look forward to reading many more stories written by Mr. Grey in the future.

Love Means Courage," Andrew Grey (Dreamspinner Press, 2009) is the first Andrew Grey novel I have read, but it definitely won't be my last. Grey writes in a very straight forward narrative with just enough poetic description to make it colourful. I like that. I also like the way his characters are developed; strong, distinct and consistent throughout. Even two-year-old Geoff Laughton is a strong personality is his own way; although the phonetic baby-talk is a bit disconcerting at times.

I also like the way the story develops--especially the relationship between Len and Cliff. Everyone who has ever written a `coming out' story will readily admit that it is a tricky business to get the mix of credibility and pace just right; too fast and it seems contrived; too slow and it appears coquettish. Happily, Grey strikes an agreeable balance.

Similarly, the events of the story unfold in a logical sequence, and with a fair amount of credibility going for them. This is particularly true of the faming scenes, which leads me to believe that Mr. Grey has spent some time on a farm in his background.

"Love Means Courage" is a good, solid read, masterfully written, and an invitation to more works by Andrew Grey.

I listened to this as an audiobook. The story was good and I had to give it 4 Stars. I loved the slow build between Len and Cliff. Taking place in a small farming town in 1984, Love certainly took a lot of courage. It was a sweet story.

I have to address the audiobook. The narrator was Sawyer Allerde. He had a very nice speaking voice when he was reading the story. However, all of the voices he gave to the different characters were terrible. The women sounded like the women in Monty Python, and no one sounds like the weird voice he gave Cliff’s son Jeff.

*** Andrew Grey is an awesome writer ! ***
Cliff, tall, slim, with long shaggy hair, is a farmer/rancher

grieving for his wife and father's deaths, is raising a son alone, and in extreme depression. The farm is being neglected.
Len, a gay man living a quiet life in their small town,

got his degree, but in the 80's jobs are scarce. He ends up working for Cliff, his old friend and long time crush, who had married Len's best friend, Ruby. They all lived in this small town where everyone knew everyone else's business. Back then, especially in small towns, small minds were evident. It's a perpetual gossip mill.
Len finds the farm in dire need. He jumps right in taking over, not taking crap from Cliff, as he gets the place upright again.

The two other workers are glad to have the help. Cliff's been drowning in sorrow, letting things go, and is at a loss as to where to begin to set things right. Len helps. He guides Cliff to get the answers at the banks, and a big discovery turns out to be a ray of hope. Deeply interesting cast of characters,
with a darling little boy.

Wonderfully written by Andrew Grey, who understands his characters. There are ups and downs, good folk, and bigots, but in all, these deserving men get their reward. Cliff is a bit slow coming around to accept things, and he's been repressing his feelings his whole life.
This is a thorough time span, with beautiful flow, hot sex, and first M/M times for Cliff, plus they prove that patience and honesty pay off.

Tim, the older man Len first met years ago, taught him it was okay to be who he was, and that there were men just like him, that "...didn't dress like women, act all froofy, or lisp." Men can just love other men, and that helped Len.

I highly recommend this lovely story ! ENJOY !

Knowing what happens to one of the heroes made this book difficult to read. It was a lovely story though. Just bittersweet.

Second time reading and I still love this one.

Learning how Len and Cliff get together is wonderful after the heartbreak of book one. A truely charming tale of love and family. Little Geoff is just perfect and I love him to peices, he is so cute and charming, I love that we see him as a child and as a grown man thanks to book one and two lol.

As for Janelle, she really is a nasty harpy. I can so see her ending up a lonely bitter old women without even cats to keep her company.

A perfect read for anyone who loves children in their M/M romances.

About 4.5 stars.

I absolutely LOVED this backstory to Len and Cliff's relationship. If you read book #1 first,

Len had a crush on Cliff in HS and thought at one point that Cliff may have reciprocated his feelings, but the moment slips past them. Years later, Len reconnects with his best friend Ruby and finds that she and Cliff have married and have a wonderful son together. He is happy for his friend. Sadly, Ruby dies unexpectedly, leaving behind her son and a grieving Cliff. Cliff is falling apart and is allowing his ranch to fall apart as well. Len decides to step in and help Cliff get back on his feet for the love of his friend Ruby who he misses dearly.

I adored this book and I loved the fact that Geoff, Len, and Cliff become a family before they even realize it. It was a very sweet depiction of people that help each other for unselfish reasons and a love that can grow from the ashes.

I was a bit worried when I first started reading this book, because I did read Love Means... No Shame first, as it is the first book in the series. This one acts as a prequel to it and involves Cliff and Len, Geoff's parents. I thought that the book was make me upset because of what happens in the other book, but I was wrong. Despite knowing what happens, I was able to forget about it and enjoy Len and Cliff's story just as much, if not more than Geoff and Eli's. Geoff as a toddler was adorable and really added to the story, because it didn't make it just about being gay. It made it about two men raising a child in a time and place where their sexuality probably won't be tolerated by many.

The conflict between Janelle and the two men that showed up at their barn, while intense, felt like it could have been a little stronger. I'm happy things worked out for them, though, and I loved reading their story. It would have been interesting to see some of it from Cliff's POV, though, as the story was told through Len's. But I enjoyed it very much, and can't wait to read the rest of the series.

I really loved this book. The focus is on the relationship between Len and Cliff (Geoff's father) and since this story takes place 25 years ago they have quite a few external obstacles to overcome.

At first Len and Cliff struggle to get up the courage to admit to themselves what they feel for each other but in the end the choice is very clear. The strength of their conviction is amazing and very reassuring. The small farm they live on is described in vivid detail and I felt right at home. Geoff as a young boy added yet more color.

If you liked 'Love Means...No Shame' you're bound to like this prequel!

My thoughts about this book are:

*Love the easiness of this romance. There are few difficulties to the main characters, none are hard to them or will be long. Everything that happened was perfect to someone searching for a romance, with 100% of love story and 0% of angst

*I wish more would be said about Geoff's mother. First of all THIS IS NOT a book that picturect women as biches or any negativeness about women in general. On the contrary, all feminine characters in this book are strong and I like them... BUT I wish more sadness and/or sorrow would be present. The 5 years boy lost his mother... Cliff lost his wife. It's part of the plot, a widower, you will know it reading the book plot. I knew it would happen... And it was so anticlimactic and almost disrespectful to this female character that I decide to take out 2 stars from my judgment. I know... It's a romance without angst.. I understand it, but THAT DEATH (in my opinion) deserve to be treated in a more respectful way.
What I'm saying is: a character can tell me he is sad and miss his best friend. Tell me he is sad is not equal show me it!!! I don't want endless crying scenes, or any unrealistic mourning behave... I want, to read about people missing her, looking at her picture, talking about her as a mother, anything... Showing me SHE WAS important too, not just a womb that gave birth to a kid, conveniently die, leaving Cliff alone and ready to fall in love with Len.

*Cliff and Len are an adorable couple. Their love story was perfect! There is perfect placed love scenes, and also just hug and cuddling when it was necessary support. They love each other, but couldn't be togueter while Cliff was denying his sexuality. BUT believe me, it can sound hard or sad, but it's not. It's a happy story... No sadness, no angst, no drama. Ever... As I said, neither when IMO it was necessary (meaning, Cliff's wife death)

I would certainly recommend it! And... I WANT TO READ MORE!
This is the prequel of the series, and now... Want to go on reading Love Means... No Shame (Book 1, about Geoff, the kid, Cliff's son)

I really liked this one much better than the first in the series. Like a lot of reviewers, I was skeptical on reading this story because I already know what is going to happen to one of the MCs but once I got into the book, I just didn't care that much.

Len and Cliff are very lovable characters. In my case, I liked Len back in Love Means... No Shame and I just fell more in love with him in this book so I was glad I got to see Len get his own story. Cliff was surprising to me. I would have thought it would take him a longer, and harder, time to accept the fact that he was gay but it didn't and I thought it was written quite well. Although, if I would have known before I read Love Means... No Shame that this was a prequel, I would have read this one first. Little Geoff was so cute and I loved seeing how he acted as a toddler and seeing how he had a big part in how Len and Cliff get together and a big part in how Cliff gets over his grief and accepts his relationship with Len.

Overall, a great book and for anyone not familiar with Andrew Grey, I'd start with this book and this series.

I really enjoyed this prequel to Love Means... No Shame. The romance and love between Cliff and Len was sweet, and it was fun seeing Geoff as a little boy. Toward the end I started remembering that Cliff is going to die as the next book in the series opens, and I realized that I had been completely wrapped up in this couple and don't want him to die in the next book. Obviously I'm not going to get my wish, but it just demonstrated to me, yet again, how wonderfully three dimensional this author makes his characters.

Highly recommend this one for everyone who wants to read a simple, uncomplicated romance among emotionally healthy characters who have the strength to stand up for their love.

I actually do give positive reviews, however this one is not really one of those. Three stars, for me that means 'meh'.

On the positive side, it is a sweet story. It's nice to read and you feel good after you finish it.

However on the negative, it is a SWEET SWEET SWEET SWEET story, and i HATE baby talk. The kid drove me nuts! Right in the middle of a dialog, I had to stop and decipher baby babble. I felt the characters were totally plastic. I felt this was like 'Ozzy and Harriot' goes Hallmark direct to DVD. There was no pathos. Every conflict is resolved in a couple pages to a perfect resolution. The only 'courage' that was displayed was 'coming out' to your sister.

I just couldn't see much point in this story.

I was a bit leery of reading this one since it's the prequel in the Love Means... series and I already knew what the future held for Len and Cliff. However, once I started reading it I was able to put that aside and really enjoyed this heartwarming and engaging romance. I liked both of the guys, it was nice to see Geoff as a toddler and as always I enjoyed the author's ability to deliver sweet and sexy at the same time. A well written and fairly uncomplicated story. Recommended.

Another winner in the series - I read them in the wrong order (read Love Means No Boundaries first because I just wanted to continue in the present). I was wary of this book for some reason, maybe because it was the back story and happened 20-some years ago, but it was beautiful. Seeing baby-Geoff is such a treat and getting to know his dad and Len better was such a treat. I love Andrew's writing - he's totally in my top 5 right now. :)

I really enjoyed this story and I'm surprised because I really didn't care for Love Means... No Shame. There was a simplicity to the story and a realness. I could definitely see two guys living in a small town falling for each other. I liked that Len's mom was supportive. Geoff was such a cute toddler. I will continue on with this series.

It was very sweet and I really enjoyed getting to read about the happy family moments between Len, Cliff and Geoff. Geoff was adorable!
I kinda wish I'd read this one before Love Means... No Shame, though. I couldn't entirely let go of the thing with Cliff that happens in No Shame.

I love this 2nd book in Andrew Grey's series, although Love Means.....Courage is really the prequel to Love Means.....No Shame. This is the story of Cliff, a widower with a young son in the early 80's and Len, the man who has had a crush on him since high school.
It's a beautiful story, very gentle and sweet.

This was pretty-much a “meh” for me. It just didn’t hit me like I expected or how it should for a “tearjerker”. Probably a 2.5, but I’m rounding down because, I know I’ve rounded up on other Grey stories, this one just didn’t grab me.
