Written by a man with political contacts that yield an inside view of major world events—the creation of Israel, the Suez Crisis, the Cold War; as well as a writer who revels in describing his observations of human beings in all their variety to his many correspondents, this second volume of Berlin's letters is uniquely enthralling

Rich, dense raises my estimation of one of my 20th century heroes even higher. A lesson in history, aesthetics and erudition. a must, especially for those who would look askance at compromise, and subtleties of negotiation. Berlin was THE master in the 20th century at seeing other points of view than his own and was never adequately taken seriously for that- indeed, it caused him to be abused by the left for being a courtier, court jester and so on.

A window into the life of an Oxford don (though an admittedly brilliant example of an Oxford don). Berlin's intellect and astonishing range of intellectual interests are exceeded only by his love of gossip. That he found the time to write these comprehensive and often probing letters with all his other duties perhaps offers a glimpse of his intellectual energy.

I have read much of Berlin's work and much about him. These letters gave an opportunity to see what a lively and often funny man he was in the course of his dealing with others. If, like me, you know only the works and filtered observations, this are first hand "real life" Berlin and enrich what you know most enjoyably.

Sir Isaiah Berlin was a philosopher and historian of ideas, regarded as one of the leading liberal thinkers of the twentieth century. He excelled as an essayist, lecturer and conversationalist; and as a brilliant speaker who delivered, rapidly and spontaneously, richly allusive and coherently structured material, whether for a lecture series at Oxford University or as a broadcaster on the BBC Thir ...more
