Based on the author’s experience designing a bunch of different kinds of visual communication, How You See the Problem Is the Problem is not intended to “give readers a fish,” so they can design for the day―nor is it to teach them “the one-and-only-best-way-in-the-history-of-ever-to-fish” as if there is only one right way. Instead, it shows readers a different way of looking at design and life, which would hope-fully make both feel a little more manageable and improve their life. How You See the Problem Is the How to Create the Visual Communication (and the Life) You Never Knew You Wanted helps students relate content to students’ lives beyond the classroom. The author provides DEEP learning that STICKS with readers and have a profound impact for years to come. The publication teaches about life and design―it’s all about being able to see, define, and solve problems. Or at least find a workaround.
I had never read an entire book for a class, but just a couple of classes in I knew it would be worth the read. Not only was the book unlike any other textbook, but it was insitful in a way that kept you engaged. I learned so much from the book that I have continued to use even after the class ended. Even if you aren't a design or communication major, I highly recommend this book due to it easy reading and enjoyable content. Most everyone is tasked with the task of creating some sort of presentation, flyer, or social media post in their lives, so why not make it where people will actually engage with you material! I was also lucky enough to have AJ Walsh as my instructor, and she is an amazing instructor!
I never thought I’d want to read a book assigned for one of my classes, but I wanted to read this one and I’m happy I finished it. This book made me feel seen while also teaching me about visual communication. I’ve never giggled while reading a book that had been assigned to me until I read this one.
