Bolstad's "GIS Fundamentals" was my very first exposure to GIS. As a computer science major and someone generally interested in the math behind these sort of things, I thought it was a great introduction to GIS. It was certainly a bit dry at points, and some sections (particularly some of the database stuff) were too simplified. Besides some typos, it was a fairly good read. It is an easy book to just pick up and read without much prior knowledge. Some of the technology stuff is out of date, but he's mostly spot-on with his predictions!
