WHAT a waste! I was so frustrated by this thing. I thought I was getting a novella but it turned out to be three chapters of three different books. All had beginnings w/ no conclusions. TOTAL waste of time.

'“I’ll miss having Santa Claus on Christmas morning.”

“I know. But growing up, growing old, is part of life. It’s okay to be a little bittersweet about what’s gone before, but there’s a better way to look at it. A way you and I especially should look at it.”

“What’s that?”

She cupped his face in her hands and smiled up at him, her gorgeous green eyes warm and loving as she said, “To quote John’s favorite philosopher Dr. Seuss: ‘Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.’”

Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.'

A Callahan Carol was a lovely and touching story to finish off my Goodreads Reading Challenge for 2011.

It is a FREE short story available from Emily March’s website, and here’s a Direct Link To Get A Callahan Carol

It was released in December 2010, before the release of Emily March’s first book in the Eternity Springs series, Angel’s Rest .

Emily March had previously written under the name of Geralyn Dawson and had a 3 book series called the Callahan Brothers with the heroes being Matthew, Mark, and Luke Callahan. Geralyn Dawson had gone through a writing funk and was seriously contemplating throwing in the towel to her writing career. But then, John Gabriel Callahan, the fourth Callahan brother, wouldn’t leave her alone, and his story was eventually told under a new pseudonym of Emily March in a new series, Eternity Springs, and a change/rebirth to the author’s writing.

I haven’t yet read the Callahan Brothers series or anything written under Geralyn Dawson, but I’ve really connected with Emily March’s Eternity Springs series, and after reading this Christmas novella, I’m very excited to read the Callahan books.

This novella is a tale of Branch Callahan, the head of the Callahan family of Brazos Bend, Texas, who has become a "Scrooge" after the loss of his wife, years ago, and then the news of the presumed death of his youngest son, John. It has been three years and they have not heard from John. Branch has lost hope that he ever will. As another Christmas approached with no news from John, Branch has decided to cancel the Callahan tradition of the Christmas “Wonderland” outside the Callahan House.

A Callahan Carol is a spin on Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol, and is a heartwarming Christmas novella. We see Celeste Blessing from Eternity Springs “A Little Piece of Heaven in the Colorado Rockies” working her magic. This is a tale of forgiveness, hope, faith and love. I got teary reading this novella and my heart ached for Branch Callahan and the whole Callahan family and the pain they had suffered over the years. But at the end of this tale, I was enveloped in a wonderful feeling of Hope and Love … that feeling that for me IS … CHRISTMAS.

The Callahan Christmas Wonderland...

Celeste Blessing, the angel of Eternity Springs...

CHRISTMAS = HOPE + LOVE...

A Callahan Carol is a short story that picks up afterHummingbird Lake: An Eternity Springs Novel, the second book in the Eternity Springs series. This is Gabe's homecoming and re-uniting with his Callahan family.

It takes place in Brazos Bend, Texas where John Gabriel (Gabe) Callahan's three brothers, Matthew, Mark, and Luke along with their wives, children and father, Branch all live. It’s Christmas and Branch Callahan is dying. His hope of ever seeing his youngest son, Gabe, again is gone and his heart is in much despair over this loss.

Many years previously the Callahan family received news that Gabe had been killed. After months of suffering from this terrible loss, the family is given news that Gabe had not died. Hope is restored as they began their search…but to no avail.

They did not know that Gabe was under a type of Witness Protection program. Plastic surgery was performed and his Social Security number changed. More than ten years had passed before Gabe was allowed to come out of the program and reveal himself to his family. And then tragedy struck throwing him into deep depression and losing all will to live.

And now in, A Callahan Carol, amid much despair and after many years separation, a family is restored and hope is born again in their hearts.

Note:
Gabe's three brothers each have their own story in a Callahan Trilogy written by Emily March under the name of Geralyn Dawson. These books are:Give Him the Slip, Never Say Neverand Always Look Twice. It is in these books that we learn of Gabe’s death.

You can read Gabe’s story in her new Eternity Springs series, Angel's Rest, written under the name Emily March. This book finishes out the Callahan series and begins a new ES series. In Angel’s Rest we learn why Gabe had not reunited with his family. And in Hummingbird Lake we are told of Gabe's trip to see his family.

Talk about Christmas in July for me! This was a great Christmas story that I loved even though it is completely the wrong time of year. The tale is simultaneously predictable and one of a kind. I love the personal, told by a child’s POV feeling. It was so much fun and really brought the spirit of Christmas out.

Character development in this one wasn’t in depth. Having read the rest of the series and therefore knowing the characters, I thoroughly enjoyed this story, but if you’ve yet to meet the characters, the tale may seem superficial. For those who know it, March draws you even deeper into their lives, throwing twists at you that you could never imagine.

This novella was admittedly not as fast paced as the rest of the series, but is very enjoyable all the same. It is a fantastic segue into March’s Eternity Springs series that I had a blast with.

A hit and miss. It wasn't terrible, but it certainly wasn't satisfying. I would have prefered it to have been left out completely and an epilogue in Angel's rest so that the author could have written it longer, better and more satisfying. Right now, I feel cheated of a story.

With Christmas right around the corner, it was a double delight to read this novella that connects Brazos Bend with the Eternity Springs series. Feisty Branch Callahan has given up on Christmas and has no joy or faith, but his sons and their families are determined to keep a tradition going despite the anger they know it will cause. When the unbelievable happens, faith and joy may be lost for all. With an unexpected blessing, and a few prayers for a Christmas miracle, the Callahan family pulls together to weather a storm that brings this story full circle.

A Callahan Carol is what I had been waiting for. It is an update on the Callahan family that let's the reader know what has been happening with them. The Brazos bend series,Matt,Luke,Mark, and now A Callahan Carol,
have been a real treat to read as they are the back story leading up to my favorite series about "Eternity Springs". I really enjoyed reading A Callahan Carol.

This is the segue way novella between Geralyn Dawson's Callahan Bros series and the Eternity Falls series by Emily March. There is an interesting Author's Note describing what happened with the publishing history between the two series.

And wow, the writing style of this novella is totally different from the romantic suspense and steamy Callahans! I am intending to read on now with Eternity Falls series and am quite curious as to where she is going to take this...

I recognize this is part of a series, so not having background beyond the recap at the beginning is fine. However, the ending leaves so many questions!

A CALLAHAN CAROL: A BRAZOS BEND CHRISTMAS NOVELLA is the story that finally completes the Callahan Brothers Trilogy (Brazos Bend Series). A CALLAHAN CAROL: A BRAZOS BEND CHRISTMAS NOVELLA is now the fourth work of Emily March's that I have read recently. Overall, this novella was charming, heartwarming, and sweet. A CALLAHAN CAROL: A BRAZOS BEND CHRISTMAS NOVELLA illustrated the future of the Callahan family after Mark "Devil" Callahan remarried Annabelle Monroe, met his long-lost child from his first marriage, reconciled with his aging father, and moved closer to his childhood hometown of Brazos Bend, Texas. Time certainly moved forward for all of the Callahan boys AND their respective families throughout the plot of this novella. While this novella, which was purposely written in the classic style of A CHRISTMAS CAROL by Charles Dickens, it was a fast-paced page turner. Honestly, the plot of A CALLAHAN CAROL: A BRAZOS BEND CHRISTMAS NOVELLA did not have as much depth as any of the previous novels included in the Callahan Brothers Trilogy (Brazos Bend Series); however, it was a easy, enjoyable, simple story. Emily March told this story about the Callahan family in a concise, straight-forward manner. Short...sweet...and to the point from beginning to end. But, I admired the fact that Emily March still drove her point about the importance of Christmas miracles, faith, family, and love home in such an artful way. I enjoyed reading A CALLAHAN CAROL: A BRAZOS BEND CHRISTMAS NOVELLA very much. More importantly, though, I look forward to discovering just exactly what other blessings Emily March will have in store for the Callahan family -- as well as other people -- when she introduces her audience to a little town called Eternity Springs, Colorado, in the future. I can't wait! So, for those readers who have read the Callahan Brothers Trilogy (Brazos Bend Series) and A CALLAHAN CAROL: A BRAZOS BEND CHRISTMAS NOVELLA, don't miss out on reading the Eternity Springs Series next!

SPOILER ALERT: Now, honestly, upon closer inspection, I noticed that plot of A CALLAHAN CAROL: A BRAZOS BEND CHRISTMAS NOVELLA contained a flaw or two that did NOT match up with the information shared about the youngest Callahan brother, John Gabriel. Although Geralyn Dawson (Emily March) revealed that John Gabriel Callahan was actually alive -- not dead as his father and brothers had believed to be true for years -- at the end of MARK, the third novel included in the Callahan Brothers Trilogy (Brazos Bend Series), I truly thought that the way in which Geralyn Dawson (Emily March) brought him into A CALLAHAN CAROL: A BRAZOS BEND CHRISTMAS NOVELLA. I refuse to spoil the reading of this novella for other readers; however, it just did not ring true. In fact, the details surrounding John Gabriel Callahan's reintroduction to AND reunion with his family in Brazos Bend, Texas, was NOTHING LESS than confusing. This inconsistency in Geralyn Dawson's (Emily March's) plot was the result of my 4-star rating of A CALLAHAN CAROL: A BRAZOS BEND CHRISTMAS NOVELLA.

So I read the Eternity Springs books before any of the Callahan books. So when I read that Matt was also CIA like Jack, it wouldn't be unlikely for the two not to know each other. Or they'd know each other in passing. Jack obviously knew that Matt's brother was missing/"dead" considering that he is the one who rescued/paid a ransom for Gabe. But he was his boss, not someone Matt might've heard of or knew in passing, but his boss. I want to be a fly on the wall when Matt realizes Jack knew JG was alive this entire time and didn't tell him. At the beginning of this book, it says they reached out to contacts all around the world. So it's safe to assume that Matt would've asked his boss, aka Jack and Jack would've lied. And when Matt called Jack to ask about Celeste, there's a good chance that Jack knew Gabe was also planning on showing up, but I he wouldn't ruin the surprise and it would give away that he knew this entire time.

Also, any doubts I had about Celeste being an angel, not just an angel person, but an actual angel is gone after reading this. Even if she wasn't an angel (we all know she is) she knew Gabe and Nic were planning to come for Christmas and she gave no indication to anyone. I am curious as to Jack's reference to Celeste being a miracle worker on the phone when Matt called to ask. How does he know? He's barely been in Eternity Springs recently and it seems like not many in town really know him and Celeste is a relative newcomer herself. Gabe and Nic's story just concluded and Angel's Rest just opened, the people of Eternity Springs don't believe in Eternity Springs woo-woo as they say yet. They don't have the belief that when Celeste speaks you listen. Did he somehow just know?

I'd also love to be a fly on the wall when the Callahan's meet Celeste in Eternity Springs for the first time.

Branch Callahan has abandoned hope that his youngest son, John, will ever return home and cancels Christmas. When all appears lost, a mysterious visitor arrives at his mansion on her Honda Gold Wing and takes him for a ride that challenges him to recall the blessings in his life.

John (Gabe) Callahan's story is told in the Eternity Springs series. The stories of the other three Callahan brothers are told in The Callahan Brothers series. A Callahan Carol was written to connect the stories of the two series. This novella tells the story of John's reunion with his family in Brazos Bend after his family feared he was dead.

This was an enjoyable, short story and made for a quick afternoon read. Fans of these two series will enjoy seeing the connection of the stories. It's added a new delight for me of the Eternity Springs series.

I received an ARC from Ms. March in exchange for my honest review.

The Callahan family continues their story in A Callahan Carol. Since the boys were young in order to keep the Christmas spirit alive their father came up with an idea to bring Christmas to everyone in the community by decorating the outside of their house like a winter wonderland. This year was different though because he wanted to forget Christmas. He was missing his son John terribly and losing hope of ever seeing him alive again.
Matt, Mark and Luke and their families all have no plans to skip Christmas and plan on decorating without their father's say so. Along with a very special Angel that comes to visit they are all hoping to fill the Callahan home and family with the much needed Christmas spirit.
I found this short holiday novella fun and a very special add on to the series.

I was given an ARC of this story in order to give an honest review. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

So... I thought this was the first in the Eternity Springs series. It is... sort of. It's also the 4th (3.5) in a Brazos Bend series written under the author's pseudonym, and there's a note at the end that explains she wrote the first three books about brothers Matthew, Mark & Luke for a different publisher under a different name. Then some time later she wrote this book about brother John (Gabe) and their father Branch to bridge the gap between the series/publishers.

John is original declared dead after being kidnapped in the Middle East, but then there's rumors of him being alive, but none of them can find him. Dad, Branch, loses hope, and declares a no Christmas rule for the rest of the family. When they disobey, he has a episode and his life hangs in the balance. A motorcycle riding "ghost/angel" (Celeste Blessing) comes to him when he hovers between life and death and he decides to live. Just as he wakes, John/Gabe arrives for the reunion and recovery of hope.

This is by far one of the best story by Emily March. What I loved about this novella is the power of love within the family and relationships between the father and sons and that of the love between brothers . The story had a twist of Christmas Carol to keep it interesting as it entangles you in the family lives of all the characters. You will not beleive how many times I had to wipe my eyes so I wouldn't just cry outright .
Very entertaining story about how tragedy can form you into someone better or break you completely, it all depends on your actions. The characters are great and love meeting all the new addition to the family and this alone will keep you turning these pages till the end. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a five star book. Excellent!! Must be added to your Must Read List.

Good, but short, bridge between Brazos Bend and Eternity Springs

This is way shorter than I had wished, and didn't explain as much as I had hoped. I really wanted to hear more about John. I plan on rereading Angel's Rest next to see if that satisfies my curiosity. It has been 7years since the surprise ending in Mark and all had not progressed as they had hoped. John still has not been found. Branch has gone all Scrooge and decided to cancel Christmas. Then things go to bits and Celeste Blessing is called on for a Christmas miracle.

This story has a moderate pace, an uncertain tone and a character oriented storyline with no steam at all. The characters are familiar and engaging, if you have read the Callahan Brothers Trilogy. I was interested in reading the Author's note at the end, which explains some things. I started reading Emily March with

Geralyn Dawson/Emily March's writing is getting better and better. I've enjoyed every book I've read by her, but this short story is the best yet. I cannot wait to read Angel's Rest!

One of March's great strengths is how well she carries the arc of a story line through a series of novels. She captures the essence of being a kid in her children, then later they've grown into teens and have hopes, dreams and uncertainties, and we see glimmers of the adults they'll become. And the adults, even as they age, they continue to learn and grow. These are not static cardboard cut-outs or formulaic heroes and heroines. These are people who live with intention and faith, people I wish lived next door.

When I read the Callahan brothers books, I was so excited to learn that I read the first book in the Eternity Springs because of this. I didn't really get into this series like the Callahan brothers series.

I was disappointed that but was glad to find out about this novella from the author.

It was great to see some type of reunion but it just left me wanting to see more interaction. It gave a little taste but wasn't satisfying enough for me. However I will say as with all of her books the writing is great.

This was a very short story, one that I read in a day. But I enjoyed every minute of it. We see the Callahan brothers all together with Branch, their father, near death. The distance of the brothers from their father seemed to fade away as they watched their father lying on his deathbed. Until two of Branch's grandchildren contacted Angel's Rest Healing Resort and talked with Celeste Blessing. I have read all the Eternity Springs books and have learned to love Celeste Blessing with her quiet ways always helping those who need healing! So I really appreciated this little prequel to that book series. And there was one additional surprise at the end of the story that I don't want to give away! But it was a really great surprise for all, including me.

A Callahan Carol, A Brazos Novella by Emily March
A Callahan Carol
A Brazos Bend novella

By Emily March

Emotions grow stronger, especially at Christmas. Something about the holidays bring sadness - especially when Hope is no longer present. Thus was the situation with Branch CALLAHAN, the patriarch to family of men, their wives and children. He had lost hope of ever seeing his youngest son, John.

Will the stubbornness of his children and grandchildren allow him to waller in his despair, or will love prevail? Read A CALLAHAN Carol by Emily March for a story of lost hope and maybe Christmas Joy!

I should have waited to read this after I read "Angel's rest" so that I understood John (Gabe)'s story. However, now that I've finished the first book in the Eternity Springs series, I feel complete. I fell in love with the Callahan's from the first book "Give him the slip". I would love to read just one more book about the Callahan's, so you can see all four brothers in action but I will be content with this story wrapping up the Callahan family. I am anxious to read the rest of the books in the Eternity Springs series, as I'm falling in love with this town.

There father Branch has a fit he has given up on hope of ever seeing his son John alive. When the family looses hope that Branch will servive someone comes to help take care of Branch. The mircles in that family and the love they all share for each other brings the holiday spirit back to life. I was so thrilled to read the next chapter in there lives. A perfect bridge between Brazos Bend and Eternity Springs!
What a wonderful and gentle reminder to all of us to keep the faith at all times and to always be surrounded by family and those who love us best!
Although I was sorry to read the last book of Brazos Bend--I am so excited to pick up with familiar friends and meet new ones in Eternity Springs.
A heartwarming story not only for this time of year, but for always!
Thank you once again, Emily March for always making your reader awaiting your titles!

Charles Dickens and Dr Souse have come to Emily March's Brazos Bend series. This is a short story that connects her earlier works about the Callahan crew of Brazos Bend with her Eternity Springs series. Relating a Scrooge tale of her own, interspersed by some wisdom from Dr Souse, March cleverly tells us how the fourth brother returns to his family and hearts are softened. To tell any more, would give away the fun of reading this story, but it was a real joy to read during this Christmas season.

Wonderfully written Christmas novella!

What a wonderful way to welcome readers to a connected but new series. I would recommend you read the books in order, LUKE, MATT, MARK and then this one, then as I am about to do start ANGEL's REST. I can hardly wait. This is a quick easy read. One that does make you smile even if there are a few tears to go with it. Fans of Geralyn Dawson will know that Emily March is the same author and no matter what name she writes under the books are still great. Now I'm off to read Angel's Rest, maybe I'll find another great series to devour.

The Callahan family had their fair share of trials and tribulations over the years. Yet, the one tradition that has been a guiding post for the clan has been the annual Callahan Christmas Yard displays, one which drew in visitors from all over the country. When Branch, the patriarch decides that there will be no Christmas till his son John return from missing, the clan and the kids are heartbroken. Overriding Branch's wishes comes at a high cost. Will the season bring its miracle in this novella of faith, love and hope?

Ok - For those of you that had read the Callahan brother's books by Geralyn Dawson and wondered why she never wrote John's book I just learned the answer. She had stopped writing.. And she is back now years later and writing under a new name Emily March . This is basically her wrap up book of all the brothers and Branch. This technically takes place after John Gabriel Callahan book Angel's Rest (under Emily March).
