ভারতবর্ষের ইতিহাস বহুশাখাপ্রশাখায় বিস্তৃত এক প্রাচীন বটবৃক্ষের মতো। দুর্বল স্মৃতিশক্তির কারণে মাঝেমাঝেই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ঘটনা কিংবা ঐতিহাসিক চরিত্রের নামধাম ভুলে যাই। সেদিন একটি বাংলা উপন্যাস পড়তে গিয়ে খেয়াল করলাম, ১৯৪২ সালের ভারত ছাড়ো আন্দোলনের আগুপিছু কারণ এবং ঘটনাবলী বেমালুম ভুলে গেছি। লজ্জার ব্যাপার! উপন্যাস পাঠ থামিয়ে তাই এই বইটি খুলে বসলাম। ভাবলাম, ভারতের গোটা ইতিহাসটাই সংক্ষেপে একবার ঝালিয়ে নেওয়া যাক।
পেঙ্গুইন প্রকাশনার Puffin ইমপ্রিন্ট থেকে বেরোনো বই। তাই এই বই যে মূলত অল্পবয়েসি পাঠকদের জন্য লেখা সেটা বুঝতে পেরেছিলাম। আমিও এমন হালকা কিছু পড়তে চাইছিলাম। কিন্তু হালকা হলেও এই বই সুস্বাদু নয়। মাত্র ৫০০ পৃষ্ঠায় আদিম যুগ থেকে নরেন্দ্র যুগ (AKA "অমৃতকাল") পর্যন্ত ইতিহাস বলা হয়েছে, কিন্তু ভাষা এবং শৈলী বেশ একঘেঁয়ে লাগলো। বিশেষত, ভারতের মধ্যযুগের ইতিহাস এমনিতেই আমার কাছে নীরস মনে হয়, এই বইতে তাকে আরো নীরস মনে হয়েছে। সেই পাঠ্যবইয়ের মতোই রাজা-বাদশার কিসসা আর সাল-তারিখের সালতামামি। অল্পবয়েসি পাঠকরা এই বই মোটেও উপভোগ করবে না।
তবু, যে-উদ্দেশ্যে বইটা হাতে নিয়েছিলাম সেই উদ্দেশ্য পূরণ হয়েছে ঠিকই, যদিও পাঠঅভিজ্ঞতা তেমন সুবিধের নয়। সহজ ভাষায় পুরো ভারতের ইতিহাস জানার মতো সুলিখিত একক বই বাজারে নেই সম্ভবত। বাংলা বা ইংরেজি কোনোটাতেই না।

The book is amazing till now, gives you an insight into Indian history. This book mainly targets kids as it makes the complex history easier for them and it has pictures for you to visualise. If you have the chance, do read it.
