Smith is one of the leading English scholars in Italian history. This volume was originally finished in 1958, then thoroughly revised. It is essentially a textbook but eminently readable and illuminating. His knowledge of the Byzantine passageways of modern (1996) Italian politics is astounding. My main interest (Southern Italy 1880-1920) is magnificent. I now understand why my grandparents emigrated to the United States shortly after World War I. It is a beautifully written and researched book

For Italy, the Risorgimento is sort of like the United States' Civil War: calamitous events leading to a unification of disparate, often antithetical, groups and governments. From then on all conflicts were subsumed under a single identity.

Denis Mack Smith è un inglese liberalconservatore che si è interessato alla storia del nostro Paese. Non solo, lo stesso storico è stato in visita in Italia, subito dopo la guerra. Si è appassionato alle vicende nostrane, così come era stato possibilista dopo il Risorgimento su di un'Italia nuova e liberale, ma invece la piega del Fascismo lo ha scosso molto.
